PowerCatSolomon Young scored a season-high 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Iowa State to an 87-79 win over Kansas State on Wednesday night.

Deonte Burton added 17 points, Naz Mitrou-Long Long had 16, Monte Morris 15 and Matt Thomas 14 for the Cyclones (16-9, 8-5 Big 12).

Iowa State built a 19-point lead and led 42-26 at the half before withstanding a furious second half rally from the Wildcats (16-10, 5-8), who got as close as six.

After shooting 34 percent (12 of 35) in the first half, Kansas State shot 58 percent (18 of 31) in the second. An 11-0 run got them within striking distances, 49-42 with 12:27 to play, but the Cyclones pushed the lead back to 15.

Kansas City Royals sign LHP Travis Wood to 2-year deal

royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have signed left-handed pitcher Travis Wood to a two-year contract, with a mutual option for the 2019 season.

The deal is worth $12 million, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity earlier this week.

The 30-year-old Wood made a career-high 77 appearances with the Chicago Cubs last season, posting a 4-0 record and a 2.95 ERA. He held lefties to a .128 average.

A 2013 National League All-Star, Wood spent the last five seasons with the Cubs after arriving in a trade with Cincinnati in 2011. He owns a career record of 43-52 with a 4.00 ERA in 259 games (133 starts). Since transitioning to the bullpen in 2015, he’s 7-2 with a 2.95 ERA in 122 appearances.

The Royals also placed pitcher Brian Flynn on the 60-day disabled list with a back injury.

Saint Xavier Boys Pick Up 14th Win

St. Xavier Rams LogoThe Saint Xavier High School boys basketball team improved to 14-2 on the season with a 70-68 win over Flint Hills Job Corps on Tuesday night at the Bradley Gym.

The Rams went undefeated on their home court this season.

Blue Jays, Lady Jays Fall to Topeka West

small-blue-jayA. J. Range scored 18 points for the Junction City Blue Jays ( 4-13 ) from his post position, but it wasn’t enough as Topeka West defeated the Blue Jays 63-50 in the capitol city on Tuesday night.

Junction City coach Nate Schmitt noted when the Blue Jays get him the ball Range does a fantastic job. “We were doing that early on in the game. We were sticking to the game plan, we were having some success. He’s a college basketball player, he’s 6’4, over 200 pounds and when he gets the ball he does a pretty good job of scoring it. I just wish that we could get it to him more, but I thought he did an excellent job.

In the girls varsity game Topeka West rolled past Junction City ( 3-14 ) 51-35 . The Chargers outscored Junction CIty 26-15 in the second half to break open that game. Ally McKenzie led the Lady Jays with 15 points.

Junction City teams play at Seaman on Friday night.

Wildcat Great Collin Klein Hired as New Quarterbacks Coach at K-State

kleinMANHATTAN, Kan. – One of the greatest quarterbacks to ever don a Kansas State uniform, Collin Klein has been hired as the Wildcats’ new quarterbacks coach, head coach Bill Snyder announced Tuesday. Klein replaces Del Miller, who announced his retirement on Monday following a 45-year coaching career with 20 years of service at K-State.

A 2012 Heisman Trophy finalist who guided the Wildcats to the Big 12 Championship, Klein returns to Manhattan after serving one year as the quarterbacks coach on Mark Farley’s staff at Northern Iowa.

“Shalin and I are very excited to come back home,” said Klein. “I’m very grateful to Coach Farley and UNI for the experience and opportunity they provided me this past year. Looking ahead, I am eager to get to work with and develop the great young talent at K-State. I am thankful to Coach Snyder for the opportunity to return to a place that I love while learning and growing under his leadership. I also want to express my thanks to Coach Miller, who helped be grow as both a quarterback and a person, and I want to build upon the success he has enjoyed coaching quarterbacks at K-State. We are thrilled to be back as a part of the Manhattan community and Wildcat Family.”

Klein was an assistant director of recruiting operations and quality control coach under Snyder in 2014 before taking over as an offensive graduate assistant the following year.

“Following Del will not be the easiest thing for one to do, but Collin – having been tutored under Del’s guidance – will do well,” Snyder said. “Fortunately, Del will remain with us through the spring to continue to mentor Collin during the out-of-season program and in spring practices. Collin will serve as the quarterback coach and Andre Coleman will coordinate the passing game along with Dana Dimel.

“Collin is a great person: caring, loyal, hard working, responsible and disciplined,” Snyder continued. “He will be received well by his peers, players and support staff, as will his lovely wife Shalin. Collin has a love and passion, not only for football, but even more so for guiding youth toward successful lives. Our program has always been centered around achieving success in five different areas of a young man’s life: becoming the best they possibly can with their faith, their family, as a person, a student and a football athlete. Collin represents those priorities as well as any player we have ever had.”

“I feel very fortunate and thankful that this position is going to a young man that I mentored in Collin Klein,” Miller added. “He holds the same values that I do and I appreciate. He’s a good person. He will be a good teacher, motivator and recruiter. I think our players will be in good hands.”

During his lone season in Cedar Falls, Klein tutored a pair of quarterbacks that split reps in Eli Dunne and Aaron Bailey. Dunne finished the year throwing for 1,175 yards and seven touchdowns, which was highlighted by a 418-yard, two-touchdown outing against Missouri State en route to FCS National Performer of the Week honors. Bailey totaled 882 yards and six touchdowns through the air, while he rushed for six scores.

During his previous two seasons on staff at K-State, Klein helped guide Jake Waters to a school-record 3,501 passing yards in 2014 and assisted Joe Hubener and Kody Cook in leading the Wildcats to a bowl in 2015 by splitting time at quarterback.

The 2012 Johnny Unitas Award winner, Klein finished his Wildcat career ranking in the school’s top 10 in 34 different game, season and career record categories. He was the first quarterback from a Power 5 school since 1998 to rush for at least 20 touchdowns and pass for 10 scores in consecutive seasons after doing so in 2011 and 2012. Klein led the Wildcats to a combined 21-5 record as the starting quarterback in 2011 and 2012, which culminated with a No. 1 national ranking, Big 12 Championship and Fiesta Bowl berth in 2012.

Klein obtained his undergraduate degree from K-State in December 2011 in business financial services and controllership. He is married to the former Shalin Spani, a former Wildcat women’s basketball player and the daughter of Kansas State and College Football Hall of Famer Gary Spani.

Chiefs Announce Moves for Coaching Staff

Childress and Nagy served as co-offensive coordinators last season. Their new roles were announced Monday.

Childress takes over from David Culley, who served as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach last season. Culley left in the offseason to be the quarterbacks coach in Buffalo.

Nagy began his coaching career with Reid in Philadelphia, then followed him to Kansas City as the quarterbacks coach. Last year was his first as co-offensive coordinator.

Royals and Wood Agree to Two Year Contract

kcr twoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A person familiar with the deal says the Kansas City Royals and left-hander Travis Wood have agreed to a $12 million, two-year contract.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the deal is pending a physical.

The 30-year-old Wood has spent the past five seasons with the World Series champion Chicago Cubs, where he posted a 2.95 ERA while working exclusively out of the bullpen last year. But he will be given an opportunity to earn a job in the Royals’ starting rotation this spring.

Wood will be reunited with two other members of last year’s Cubs championship team in Kansas City. Outfielder Jorge Soler arrived in a trade for closer Wade Davis and right-hander Jason Hammel agreed to a $16 million, two-year contract.
