School-Record Five Players Named to Academic All Big 12 Teams

mens-basketballMANHATTAN, Kan. – A school-record five players were selected to Academic All-Big 12 Teams on Thursday, including four on the First Team, as the league office announced its 26-member all-academic teams.

Seniors Austin Budke, Wesley Iwundu and Zach Winter and junior Mason Schoen were named to the league’s 17-member first team, which consists of those student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA. Senior D.J. Johnson was selected to the 9-member second team, which honors student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 to 3.19.

The five Academic All-Big 12 selections surpass the previous high of four honorees in 1999, while four first team picks are the most since having three in 1998. All five received the honor for the first time in their careers.

In head coach Bruce Weber’s tenure at K-State, he has now seen 10 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big 12 honors a total of 12 times. The individual honors continue another solid academic year for the Wildcats, as all five selections were among 11 players named to the Fall 2016 Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Iwundu, a starter in all 28 games this season, leads the Wildcats in both scoring (12.9 rpg.) and rebounding (6.3 rpg.), while Johnson paces the Big 12 in field goal percentage (61.1) to go with averages of 11.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Budke, a former walk-on who earned a scholarship in January, has seen time in 20 games off the bench this season, while walk-ons Winter and Schoen has seen action in 12 and 11 games, respectively.

Budke was recently one of six players named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 7 Men’s Basketball First Team. He is now eligible for CoSIDA’s Academic All-America team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the academic all-league men’s basketball team consisted of 19 first team members combined with 13 on the second team.  First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team’s scheduled contests.  Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.  Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Oklahoma State Rallies to Defeat Kansas State

wildcatJawun Evans and Leyton Hammonds led Oklahoma State back from a 14-point first-half deficit to defeat Kansas State 80-68 on Wednesday night.

With 6:07 left in the first half, Oklahoma State (19-9, 8-7 Big 12) used a 14-0 run over the next 3:08 to tie the game at 33. An Evans’ 3-pointer as time expired at the half left the Cowboys with a one-point deficit.

Oklahoma State took the lead on a Hammonds layup with 16:03 left in the game. Hammonds finished with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds. Evans scored a game-high 21 points, making 11 of 12 free throws, and had nine assists. Brandon Averette added 13 points.

The Cowboys outscored the Wildcats 42-29 in the second half.

Wesley Iwundu led the Wildcats (17-11, 6-9) with 21 points, shooting 14 of 17 from the free-throw line, and collecting nine rebounds. Dean Wade scored 11 points.

Jayhawks Clinch Share of Big 12 Title

jayhawkFrank Mason III scored 20 points, Carlton Bragg provided a big lift off the bench and No. 3 Kansas pulled away in the second half to beat TCU 87-68 on Wednesday night and clinch a share of its 13th consecutive Big 12 championship.

Devonte Graham added 17 points and seven assists, and Bragg and Josh Jackson scored 15 points apiece, as the Jayhawks (25-3, 13-2) cruised to their NCAA-leading 60th conference title.

Their streak dating to coach Bill Self’s second season in Lawrence matches the Division I record of 13 straight league titles UCLA set in the 1960s and ’70s. To put it into perspective, Kansas has not failed to win a share of the Big 12 since the 20-year-old Jackson was 8.

Kansas can clinch the outright title with a victory at Texas on Saturday.

Alex Robinson had 15 points for the Horned Frogs (17-11, 6-9), who have lost four straight and still have never won in Allen Fieldhouse. Jaylen Fisher added 11 points and JD Miller had 10.

K-State Sweeps Athlete of the Week Honors Ahead of Big 12s

PowerCat

MANHATTAN, Kan. – A school record in the weight throw by Janee’ Kassanavoid and top-five program mark in the shot put by Brett Neelly led to welcomed news for Kansas State prior to the start of the Big 12 Championship meet. K-State’s throwers swept Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors after their performances at the Steve Miller Open, the conference office announced on Thursday.

The accolades mark the first Athlete of the Week honor for both Kassanavoid and Neelly, who became the 13th Wildcat woman and the eighth male to be named Athlete of the Week in the Big 12 era. The Wildcats have now earned the award three times this season, the first coming after newcomer Nina Schultz claimed the honor on February 8 after a dominant display in the pentathlon at the DeLoss Dodds Invitational.

“Both have really worked hard and have been extremely focused over the last couple of weeks,” throws coach Greg Watson said about his athletes’ performances. “Now we are looking for them to carry this momentum into the Big 12 Championship meet and continue to build on their personal bests.”

Kassanavoid broke the meet and school record with a toss of 21.81m/71-06.75 inside Ahearn Field House last week. The mark shattered Loren Grove’s school record (21.41m/70-03) and meet record (21.10m/69-02.75), both of which were set during the 2008 season.

The senior thrower, who entered the competition with the ninth-best mark in weight throw in Division I, now sits in fourth in the nation heading into the Big 12 Championship meet. She also maintained the top spot in the Big 12 with the throw.

Neelly closed out the Steve Miller Open with bang, recording a personal-best throw of 18.58m/60-11.50 in shot put to win the event and move to a tie for fifth place on the school’s all-time list with Andrew Gilliam. The sophomore has now won all of five meets that he has thrown in and he currently holds the second-best mark in the Big 12 behind Kansas’ Nicolai Ceban, who has a season-best throw of 19.85m/65-01.50.

K-State opens competition at the Big 12 Championship on Friday at the Lied Recreation Center in Ames, Iowa. More information on the conference championship can be found on the Big 12 website by clicking here.

· Underwood played two seasons at K-State (1984-86) for the legendary Jack Hartman then returned in 2006 for a 6-year run on the coaching staffs of head coaches Bob Huggins and Frank Martin, where he helped the Wildcats to a 140-66 (.680) record and 6 postseason appearances.

· With just 4 regular-season games remaining, K-State continues to jockey for both Big 12 Championship seeding and postseason opportunities, as the Wildcats are one of 8 Big 12 schools with at least 17 wins. The team sits at No. 33 in the ESPN BPI and No. 57 in the NCAA RPI rankings.

· K-State leads the series with Oklahoma State, 79-52, and is looking to sweep the season series for the first time since 2012 after posting its first win at Gallagher-Iba Arena in 5 years with a 96-88 victory on Jan. 18.
