Kansas Women’s Basketball Falls to Oklahoma State

jayhawkOKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Kaylee Jensen had 23 points and 12 rebounds, Mandy Coleman scored 14 points and grabbed 18 boards and Oklahoma State withstood Kansas‘ fourth-quarter rally for a 79-75 win in the first round of the Big 12 Conference Tournament on Friday night.

The seventh-seeded Cowboys move on to play second-seeded and No. 12 Texas on Saturday.

Areanna Combs’ layup with 8:52 to play put the Cowboys up 60-47. Kansas used a 17-7 run to pull within three on Jayde Christopher’s layup following her steal with four minutes left, but the Jayhawks failed to get closer.

Oklahoma State (17-13) led 34-29 at intermission, and Chayla Cheadle started the third quarter with a 3-pointer for the Jayhawks. Karli Wheeler later added a pair of free throws to push the Cowboys’ advantage to 48-38.

Diana Omozee scored 21 points and had eight rebounds for the Cowboys, who amassed a 53-24 rebounding advantage with 20 coming on the offensive end for 22 second-chance points.

Jessica Washington and Kylee Kopatich each scored 18 points and Jada Brown had 14 for Kansas.

D.J. Johnson Leads Wildcats to Senior Day Win

PowerCatMANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — D.J. Johnson had 19 points in his final game at Bramlage Coliseum, helping Kansas State to a 61-48 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday and giving the Wildcats‘ NCAA Tournament hopes a boost.

Fellow senior Wesley Iwundu added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats (19-12, 8-10), who also snapped a four-game home skid and locked up the No. 6 seed for next week’s Big 12 Tournament.

That means Kansas State will have a first-round bye for the first time in three years.

Texas Tech (18-13, 6-12) may have had its own NCAA Tournament hopes dumped with its ninth straight road defeat. The Red Raiders haven’t won back-to-back games since December.

Keenan Evans and Niem Stevenson led them with 11 points apiece.

Search Committee Announced for K-State Athletics Director

PowerCatMANHATTAN — Kansas State University President Richard Myers today announced the formation of an eight-member search committee comprised of faculty, students, alumni and athletics representatives that will assist him in selecting the university’s next director of athletics. Myers appointed K-State Alumni Association President and CEO Amy Button Renz ’76, ’86 to chair the committee.

The committee will begin work immediately on a national search and offer its recommendations to Myers later this spring.

“The position of director of athletics at K-State has evolved into one of the top jobs in the country,” Myers said. “We are members of a strong conference and have incredible support from our passionate alumni base, students and other fans across the state and around the world. We are confident this position will attract highly qualified candidates.”

In addition to Button Renz, members of the search committee include: Dante Barnett ‘15, graduate student and former K-State football player; John Buckwalter, dean of the K-State College of Human Ecology; Suzie Fritz ‘02, K-State head volleyball coach; Jim Johnson ‘84, president and CEO of GE Johnson Construction Company; Hunter Post, K-State senior in kinesiology/pre-medicine and student member of president’s advisory committee on athletics; Be Stoney, K-State associate professor of curriculum and instruction and faculty athletics representative; and Mary Vanier ‘89, president of Grand Mere Development. Roberta Maldonado-Franzen ‘00, director of talent acquisition for K-State Human Capital Services, will assist the committee as a liaison.

Myers said he was very pleased Button Renz agreed to lead this search.

“Amy’s career has spanned nearly 40 years at K-State, and she has consistently demonstrated a long-standing commitment to alumni, students, faculty and staff,” Myers said. “Her relationships extend to the entire K-State family, and she is ideally suited to lead this search. We are fortunate to have a person with her qualifications and integrity.”

Commenting on the committee’s charge, Button Renz said, “I am honored to serve in this role and look forward to working with President Myers and the committee to bring the best possible candidates to Manhattan. The future of our athletics program has never been brighter, and we are excited to get started with the search.”

There will be no further updates from the committee until the new director of athletics is selected.

Wildcats Defeat TCU

PowerCatFORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Wesley Iwundu scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds in his record 119th career start for Kansas State, and the Wildcats held on to beat TCU 75-74 on Wednesday night in a matchup of teams considered to be on the NCAA Tournament bubble.

Dean Wade had 20 points for the Wildcats (18-12, 7-10), who had lost eight of their previous 10 games.

The tournament chances for TCU (17-13, 6-11) under first-year coach Jamie Dixon took a significant hit. The Frogs lost their sixth consecutive game, even after cutting an 11-point halftime deficit to one.

Vlad Brodziansky had 18 points for the Horned Frogs, who played their home finale four days after a 61-60 loss there to 10th-ranked West Virginia, which got its game-winning free throw with 4.8 seconds left after a questionable foul call.

Officials had to get between players in the home finale after Brodziansky was fouled and ended up on his stomach on the floor with 14 1/2 minutes left in the game.

In the aftermath of that, technical fouls were called on Kansas State guard Kamau Stokes and TCU freshman point guard Jaylen Fisher, who was clearly agitated after apparently taking a shot to the face.

That was also the start of a 10-2 spurt by the Horned Frogs to get them within 50-49 on Brandon Parrish’s 3-pointer with 10:55 left. That was the closest they would get, though they would get within a single point four more times in the last 5 minutes, including Alex Robinson’s 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

Robinson had 14 points while Kenrich Williams had 13 points with 11 rebounds, and Parrish had 11 points.

Kamau Stokes also had 16 points for K-State, while D.J. Johnson had 12.
