K-state’s WIllis Drafted by Cincinnati in Round Three

willis

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State defensive end Jordan Willis capped off a stellar senior campaign as he was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the ninth pick of the third round – No. 73 overall – in the 2017 NFL Draft on Friday night.

Willis extended K-State’s Big 12-leading draft streak to 24-straight years, a mark that goes back to 1994 when Thomas Randolph(2nd Round, New York Giants) and current K-State pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach Andre Coleman (3rd Round, San Diego Chargers) were selected. In addition, the Wildcats’ 24-year streak was tied for the 14th-longest in the nation at the time of the pick.

A product of Kansas City, Missouri, Willis is the fourth Wildcat to be taken by Cincinnati and the first since offensive tackle Tim Stone was selected in the 11th round of the 1986 NFL Draft. Prior to Stone, running back Issac Jackson was selected by the Bengals in in 1974 (15th round) and wide receiver John Tuttle was picked the followed year (16th round).

Willis is coming off an outstanding senior campaign in which he picked up Second Team All-America honors from Sporting News and Pro Football Focus in addition to third-team accolades from the Associated Press and Phil Steele. The 2016 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Defensive Lineman of the Year tied K-State’s single-season sacks record with 11.5 to lead the Big 12 and tie for 12th nationally, while he totaled 17.5 tackles for loss to finish second in the conference and tie for 21st in the country.

A product of Kansas City, Missouri, Willis finished third in school history with 26.0 career sacks, a mark that also tied for seventh in Big 12 history. He also finished ninth in school history in career TFLs (40.5), while he was the first Wildcat to crack the list since 2001. Willis, who led K-State to a 32-20 record, four bowl berths and two bowl victories during his career, also had seven forced fumbles to tie for fifth in school history.

Chiefs Draft Quarterback in First Round

small chiefsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs boldly moved up in the NFL draft on Thursday night to select Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the 10th overall pick, giving them an heir apparent to veteran Alex Smith.

Kansas City sent its first-round picks this year and next year and one of two third-round picks in this year’s draft to Buffalo, climbing from the No. 27 pick to take the second QB off the board. North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky went to the Chicago Bears second overall, while Heisman Trophy winner Deshaun Watson of Clemson went to the Houston Texas at No. 12.

It’s the third time in the common draft era that Kansas City has taken a quarterback in the first round, and the first since Todd Blackledge in 1983. Mahomes is also the second QB to be taken in the first round by a Reid-coach team following Donovan McNabb with Philadelphia in 1999.

Ladd Braden — Wakefield Head Coach

Rowing Concludes Regular Season at Dillons Sunflower Showdown

rowingMANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women’s rowing team will make the short trip down I-70 for one of its most anticipated races of the season as the team looks to reclaim the Sunflower Showdown Cup at the Dillons Sunflower Showdown against in-state rival Kansas.

The race, which was originally scheduled for Saturday in Kansas City, will now begin at 5:45 p.m., on Friday in Lawrence, Kansas, at Burcham Park.

“I think this year we will come in more aware that if we do not perform well, Kansas will beat us,” head coach Patrick Sweeney said. “Last year, we came into the race flat. We were looking beyond to the Big 12 Championship and it showed in the results. It is always tight racing. We cannot be complacent. This season, we are getting quicker week-to-week, so if we continue that we will be ready for Friday’s races and ready for the Big 12 Championship.”

K-State has been extremely successful against the Jayhawks, winning five of the last seven head-to-head matchups between the two programs. The competition also serves as the Wildcats’ final race before the Big 12 Championship regatta on May 13-14 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

With the potential for poor conditions still looming, Sweeney believes his team is ready to handle the challenges that inclement weather and wind might bring.

“It is an outdoor sport and you have to be prepared to change things,” Sweeney added. “Part of the maturity is being able to handle the changes. You cannot control many things in rowing. What you can control is your emotions and managing stress. It is a great learning process.”

The Wildcats will also look to carry its momentum from the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta (SIRAs) into Friday’s event. During the mid-April regatta, held on Melton Hill Lake, K-State saw all four of its boats earn gold medals. The team’s performance marks the fourth-straight season that it has had all of its boats medal and the first since the 2014 season that all of its boats won gold medals.

The race is free to the public and can be viewed from the Kansas Boathouse in Burcham Park (200 Indiana Street, Lawrence, Kansas).

Garcias homer to help Quintana, White Sox top Royals, 5-2

kc royalsCHICAGO (AP) — Avisail Garcia and Leury Garcia homered to back run-starved starter Jose Quintana and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 on Wednesday to complete a three-game sweep.

Chicago won its fourth straight, while Kansas City dropped every game on a seven-game trip.

Quintana (1-4) had a season-high 10 strikeouts in six innings. He allowed five hits and two runs — one earned — and walked two. The left-hander received only four runs of support in his first four starts combined.

Avisail Garcia’s two-run homer, his fourth of the season, went to deep center field in the sixth inning to give Chicago a 4-2 lead. Leury Garcia put a line drive over the fence in right to close the scoring in the seventh.
