Former KC Chief player arrested on pot charge in Oklahoma

EL RENO, Okla. (AP) — Former NFL player Kevin Michael Sampson has been released on bond after he was arrested with more than one pound of marijuana and a stolen shotgun in Oklahoma.

The Oklahoman reports (https://bit.ly/2tTHZYR ) that the 36-year-old Sampson was arrested Monday in El Reno, about 30 miles (46 kilometers) west of Oklahoma City. A police report says officers found 21 large clear plastic bags containing marijuana in the trunk of Sampson’s car as well as a shotgun stolen in Missouri and digital scales.

Sampson played three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs as an offensive tackle from 2004 to 2006.

Officials say Sampson posted bond Tuesday on complaints of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and knowingly concealing stolen property. Online court records don’t indicate whether he is represented by an attorney.

K-State’s Reed Named to Thorpe Award Watch List

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State junior defensive back D.J. Reed was one of 45 players nationally to be named to the watch list for the 2017 Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s best defensive back, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame announced Friday.

Brigade Use Big Seventh Inning to Seal Win

Rathert FIeld

The Junction City Brigade exploded for nine runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Baldwin City Blues 12-2 at Rathert Field Wednesday night. The game was called after the seventh inning due to a 10-run rule.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Led by a trio of juniors, Kansas State totaled four football players named to the Preseason All-Big 12 team as chosen by media representatives who cover the league, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Winston Dimel (fullback), Dalton Risner (offensive line) and D.J. Reed (defensive back) were joined by sophomore Reggie Walker (defensive line) to give the Wildcats the third-most players on the list behind Texas and defending champion Oklahoma. Dimel was named to the preseason team for a second-straight year, while the other three are first-time honorees.

Dimel, Risner and Reed each earned 2016 First Team All-Big 12 honors from the league’s coaches, while Walker was the Defensive Freshman of the Year, as they led K-State to a 9-4 record and a victory in the Texas Bowl.

Risner started all 13 games at right tackle in 2016 after starting every game at center the year prior. Both he and Dimel were an integral part to K-State’s rushing attack, which set the school record for rushing yards per carry (5.27) and ranked in the top 10 in three other categories.

Reed, a community-college transfer prior to last year, was the 2016 Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year after ranking fifth nationally and tying for third in school history with a Big 12-leading 19 passes defended. A member of the 2017 Bednarik Award watch list, Reed tied for second on the team with 75 tackles to go along with three interceptions.

Brigade Fall to Midwest Veterans

Brigade vs. Monarchs

The Junction City Brigade fell to the Midwest Veterans 10-4 Tuesday evening in a ballgame played in Eudora, Kansas.

The loss dropped Junction City to 17-11 on the season and one half game out of first place in the Mid Plains League Western Division standings behind the Topeka Golden Giants.

The Golden Giants defeated the Baldwin City Blues 7-5.

Junction City hosts the Baldwin City Blues at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at Rathert Field.

American League Wins the All Star Game

MIAMI (AP) — Robinson Cano (kuh-NOH’) was a late addition to the American League All-Star team, and he made a late contribution to a 2-1 win over the National League in Miami on Tuesday.

Cano led off the 10th inning with a homer off Wade Davis to break a 1-1 deadlock and earn MVP honors. The Mariners second baseman landed on his eighth All-Star team only as an injury replacement for Starlin Castro of the Yankees.

It was the first extra-inning home run in an All-Star Game since Reds slugger Tony Perez hit one exactly 50 years ago. Perez threw out one of the ceremonial first pitches before the game.

The American League jumped out on top in the fifth inning against Dodgers left Alex Wood as Boston outfielder Mookie Betts hit a two-out double and scored on a single by Twins infielder Miguel Sano (sah-NOH’) to break the ice. The National League tied it on Yadier Molina’s (YAH’-dee-ehr moh-LEE’-nuhz) solo homer off Ervin Santana in the bottom of the sixth, a half-inning after the Cardinals catcher was inserted into the game.

Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel received the victory after stranding the potential winning run on third base in the ninth. Cleveland’s Andrew Miller got the save, striking out Cody Bellinger to end it.

It’s the fifth straight victory for the American League, and the 17th in the last 20 contests that didn’t end in a tie. The outcome means the all-time series is tied for the first time since the NL beat the AL in 1964. Each league has won 43 times, with two ties.

The outcome no longer determines home-field advantage for the World Series, as it had since 2003. Instead, the American League winners get $20,000 apiece, while the losers get nothing.

K-State’s Valentine, Najvar Garner Preseason Watch List Honors

MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the first time since 2009, a Kansas State tight end is a candidate for the John Mackey Award as Dayton Valentine earned a spot on the 2017 preseason watch list, the organization announced Tuesday.

Additionally, center Reid Najvar was named to the Rimington Trophy watch list after being placed on the award’s spring watch list in May.

Valentine, a product of Baldwin City, Kansas, is just the third Wildcat to be a candidate for the John Mackey Award, following 2004 preseason candidate Brian Casey and 2009 midseason candidate Jeron Mastrud. Najvar’s mention for the Rimington Trophy is the eighth by a Wildcat and seventh since 2010. B.J. Finney was a candidate in 2012 and 2013 before being a finalist as a senior in 2014. Nick Leckey was also a finalist during his senior campaign in 2003, while other previous K-State candidates include Jordan Bedore (2008), Wade Weibert (2010) andDalton Risner (2016).

Both Valentine and Najvar were Honorable Mention All-Big 12 picks by the league’s coaches in 2016 after starting all 13 games and helping lead the Wildcats to a 9-4 record and a victory in the Texas Bowl. The duo played a significant part in K-State’s run-blocking unit that set the school record for rushing yards per carry (5.27), rank third in school history in total rushing yards (3,013) and rushing yards per game (231.8), and seventh in rushing touchdowns (39). K-State’s 39 rushing scores ranked sixth in the nation last year, the first time the Wildcats ranked in the top 10 since 2012.

The Wildcats open their seven-game home slate and the 2017 season with the ninth-annual K-State Family Reunion on Saturday, September 2, against Central Arkansas. As K-State draws nearer to running its consecutive sellout streak to 40 games, tickets can be purchased through the K-State Athletics Ticket office online at www.k-statesports.com/tickets, by phone at 1-800-221-CATS or at the main ticket office inside Bramlage Coliseum.
