The fall sports information meeting for Junction City High School athletes, parents and guardians was held Monday evening in the Shenk Gym.

Afterwards individual team meetings were held.

Randall Zimmerman, Blue Jay head football coach, noted there was a good turnout. ” We had a really good group of kids. We’ve had a really good summer. The ones that have committed to the weight room have done a nice job.”

Zimmerman talked about the main message to the students and parents. “Just to do right and let us coach your kids. We’re here for them and we’re going to teach them a little bit of football but it’s more about getting them ready and preparing them for the real game, the game of life and those kind of things.” Zimmerman it will include simple life skill things. “Just be your best at all times. Everything else takes care of itself.”

Football practice begins August 14th at 3 p.m.  This will be the 24th season that Zimmerman has served as head coach for Junction City Blue Jay football. The season opener is September 1 vs. Emporia at Al Simpler Stadium in Junction City.

K-State Football Reports to Fall Camp

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Just over a month before the season opener against Central Arkansas on September 2, Kansas State football players reported to the Vanier Family Football Complex on Monday morning for the beginning of fall camp.

K-State will conduct approximately 17 practices over the next 19 days before getting in its regular in-season routine when classes begin on Monday, August 21.

Fans can get their first look at the 2017 Wildcats on Saturday, August 12, as K-State hosts its annual Fan Appreciation Day. For details on the event, which begins at 5 p.m., please click here. Fans should note that K-State Athletics will use this event to unveil its enhanced screening procedures this year at Bill Snyder Family Stadium as metal detectors will be set up at Gate B to introduce fans to the screening required to comply with the state’s concealed carry gun law.

The West Stadium Center ticket office will be open during Fan Appreciation Day for fans wishing to purchase single-game tickets. Fans in attendance will have the opportunity to purchase a special ticket package that includes a souvenir for the Fan Appreciation Day autograph session as a K-State mini-helmet will be included in the first 100 Wildcat 4 Packs purchased in person at 4 p.m.

Ticket availability for the Oklahoma game is down to scattered singles and standing-room only. Wildcat 4 Packs, which include four reserved tickets, are still available for K-State’s other six home games and are only $99 for Central Arkansas and Charlotte, $149 for Baylor, West Virginia and Iowa State, and $199 for TCU. The mini-helmet Wildcat 4 Packs are limited to the first 100 purchases in person on Fan Appreciation Day.

Those who are unable to attend Fan Appreciation Day can still order tickets online at www.kstatesports.com/tickets, by phone at 1-800-221-CATS or at the main ticket office inside Bramlage Coliseum.

K-State will hold its annual Media Day on Thursday beginning with a press conference featuring head coach Bill Snyder at 4 p.m. Fan can watch the press conference live, for free, at www.k-statesports.com.

Following the season-opener against Central Arkansas, K-State hosts Charlotte on September 9 prior to traveling to Nashville, Tennessee, for a matchup against SEC foe Vanderbilt on September 16. After the game against the Commodores and a bye week, the Wildcats open Big 12 play at home on September 30, against Baylor.

Royals Get Cabrera from White Sox for Two Minor Leaguers

BOSTON (AP) — Looking to bolster their offense for a run for a playoff spot, the Kansas City Royals acquired outfielder Melky Cabrera from the Chicago White Sox on Sunday for two minor-league pitchers.

The Royals entered the day three games behind the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians. Kansas City holds the second wild-card spot by 2½ games over Tampa Bay.

The Royals had their season-high nine-game winning streak snapped by Boston on Saturday night — 9-8 in 10 innings.

The 32-year-old Cabrera was batting .288 with 13 homers and 56 RBIs for the White Sox. He’s also is tied for the majors’ lead with nine outfield assists.

In his 13th season in the majors, Cabrera, who also with the Royals in 2011, is a switch hitter. He’s second amongst active switch hitters with a .286 career average.

Kansas City sent a pair of Single-A pitchers in the deal: 22-year-old right-hander A.J. Puckett and 23-year-old left-hander Andre Davis. The White Sox also sent Kansas Citycash considerations in the deal.

Puckett was the club’s second-round selection in 2016 and Davis was picked in the eighth round in 2015.

Bismark Captures Championship of Babe Ruth Midwest Regional

The team from Bismark, North Dakota captured the title of the Midwest Regional Tournament for 13-15 year old players on Sunday at Rathert Field in Junction City.

Bismark defeated Southeast Missouri 9-3 in the championship game. In the semifinal round Bismark had defeated Columbus, Kansas 10-0 while Southeast Missouri was a 3-1 winner over Davenport, Iowa.

Paul Unrau, Cal Ripken State Commissioner for Kansas, noted this tournament went well. “Junction City hosted a 16-18 regional last week and then the 13-15 this week. Went very smoothly, and weather cooperated once we got the first day over with. ” Unrau estimated each team brought about 50 people to Junction City for the tournament. “There’s a lot of amenities and things here in the city that bode really well for bringing in a lot of people. The covered grandstand with ceiling fans at Rathert Field is also considered a strength.

Bob Willis, Kansas State Babe Ruth Commissioner, noted he was appreciative of Junction City for hosting two tournaments back to back. “That’s a tremendous undertaking.” He noted the tournaments also have a tremendous impact on the community.

Bismark finished first in the Midwest Regional for a third consecutive year, and will advance to the Babe Ruth World Series in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, which is scheduled August 10-17. The Junction City Reds competed in the Midwest Regional this year and went 0-3.

Junction City has been selected to host another Midwest Regional Tournament for 13-15 year old players in 2018.

 

Gordon’s Triple Caps Royals Rally

BOSTON (AP) — Alex Gordon’s two-run triple capped a four-run eighth inning, and the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, a day after their season-high, nine-game winning streak was snapped.

Alcides Escobar added a two-run single in the eighth and drove in three runs for the Royals, who lost in extra innings on Saturday after taking the series opener.

Rookie Rafael Devers hit a solo homer for Boston and starter Drew Pomeranz gave up one run on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings in his 100th career start.

Jason Hammel (5-8) allowed three runs on seven hits to end a six-start winless streak. His last victory also came against the Red Sox, at home on June 19.

Kelvin Herrera got the final three outs for his 23rd save, getting Mookie Betts to fly out with the bases loaded.

Reds Fall to Salida, Colorado in Babe Ruth Midwest Regional

The Junction City Reds fell to Salida, Colorado 7-1  in the final game of pool play in the Babe Ruth Midwest Regional for players, ages 13-15. The teams played Saturday night at Rathert Field.

Other scores from the tournament on Saturday included Moorehead, Minnesota defeating Scottsbluff, Nebraska 22-2, Bismark, North Dakota rolling past Southeast Missouri 26-3, and Davenport, Iowa defeating Columbus, Kansas 10-3.

The semifinals of the tournament on Saturday will pit Southeast Missouri against Davenport, Iowa at noon followed by Columbus, Kansas against Bismark, North Dakota at 2:30 p.m. The winners play for the championship at 5 p.m.

Junction City finished 0-3 in the tournament.

Moustakas’ 30th Home Run Lifts Royals Over Red Sox

BOSTON (AP) — Salvador Perez and Mike Moustakas homered off emergency starter Rick Porcello, who took over when David Price went back on the disabled list because of inflammation in his left elbow, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Red Sox 4-2 Friday night for their season-high ninth straight win.

Boston has lost five of six and nine of 14, dropping out of the AL East lead for the first time since June 29 and falling a half-game behind the New York Yankees.

Price started the season on the DL and didn’t make his first start until May 29. The 31-year-old left-hander, winner of the 2012 AL Cy Young Award, is 5-3 with a 3.82 ERA.

Porcello (4-14), who had been scheduled to pitch Saturday, leads the major leagues in losses. He allowed four runs and six hits in seven innings.

Jason Vargas (13-4) gave up one run and five hits in six innings. Vargas, who had been winless in three starts since June 30, is one shy of his career high for wins, set in 2012 with Seattle.

Kelvin Herrera pitched a one-hit ninth for his 22nd save in 25 chances, getting rookie Rafael Devers to hit into a game-ending forceout after Andrew Benintendi’s two-out single.

Day Two of Babe Ruth Midwest Regional

The Junction City Reds fell to Bismark, North Dakota 12-2 in a 10-run rule five inning baseball game at Rathert Field Friday night. The matchup came in the second round of pool play in the Babe Ruth Midwest Regional for 13-15 year old players.

Junction City is 0-2 in the tournament, and will play Salida, Colorado in the tournament at 7:30 Saturday night. Salida is also 0-2 in the tournament.

In other games on Friday Davenport, Iowa rolled past Scottsbluff, Nebraska 23-0, SEMO South of Missouri downed Salida 6-3, and Columbus, Kansas defeated Moorehead, Minnesota 5-0. The tournament continues through Sunday.

Babe Ruth Midwest Regional Opens

The Junction City Reds fell to Southeast Missouri 19-2 Thursday night in the opening round of pool play in the Babe Ruth Midwest Regional Tournament for players, ages 13 to 15. The games were played at North Park in Junction City.

In other opening day games Moorhead, Minnesota defeated Davenport, Iowa 9-5, Bismark, North Dakota downed Salida, Colorado 16-2 and Columbus, Kansas defeated Scottsbluff, Nebraska 22-2.

The tournament continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Rathert Field.

Baseball Tournament Location Change

The first round games for the Babe Ruth Midwest Regional Baseball Tournament today ( Thursday ) have been moved from Rathert Field to North Park. The field conditions at Rathert Field are too wet.

The tournament is for 13-15 year old players.

The Junction City Reds baseball team will play SEMO from Missouri at a 8 p-m this evening. We will broadcast that game on the Talk of JC beginning with the opening ceremony at 7:30 p-m.
