First-ever New Year’s Day Tilt Highlights Big 12 Schedule

2017-18 Schedule in PDF Format  |  Mini-Game Ticketing Plans

MANHATTAN, Kan. – A first-ever matchup on New Year’s Day, along with a Big Monday home game with rival Kansas, highlights the Big 12 Conference portion of the Kansas State men’s basketball schedule released today.

The Wildcats will host former head coach Bob Huggins and his West Virginia Mountaineers in the conference home opener at 4 p.m., on Monday, January 1 on ESPNU. It will mark the first time in program history of playing on New Year’s Day after playing on New Year’s Eve six times in the last 10 seasons.

ESPN’s Big Monday will make a return visit to Bramlage Coliseum on Monday, January 29 when it will once again broadcast the Dillion’s Sunflower Showdown with Kansas at 8 p.m. It will mark the sixth time in the last eight seasons that Big Monday has broadcast the rivalry from Manhattan and the ninth time overall since 1993.

Overall, it will be the Wildcats’ 22nd appearance on Big Monday, including the 12th matchup with the Jayhawks.

For the second consecutive season, K-State will open league play at the earliest point in school history, as the Wildcats travel to Ames, Iowa to take on Iowa State on Friday, December 29 at 8 p.m., on ESPNU. It will be the earliest start date for a conference opener, surpassing the 2016-17 season, which began on December 30. It will mark the second straight year that league games will be played in December.

In all, the Wildcats will play 12 of their 18 league games against teams that advanced to the postseason a year ago, including six in Bramlage Coliseum. In addition, four of the nine home league contests will also fall on Saturday, including matchups with NCAA Tournament participants Baylor and Iowa State, NIT champion TCU and Texas Tech.

“The Big 12 consists of some of the best players and coaches in the country, so I know it will once again be one of the best leagues top-to-bottom,” said sixth-year head coach Bruce Weber. “There is no such thing as a perfect schedule as you have to play everyone twice, but we are fortunate to have back-to-back home games on three different occasions as well as three Saturday home games in the month of February. Those will be huge factors in building momentum and we hope will be significant positives for both our team and the fans.”

All but two conference contests will be broadcast on one of ESPN’s family of networks, including four on either ESPN or ESPN2. In addition to its Big Monday matchup with Kansas on ESPN, the Wildcats will play three other games on ESPN or ESPN2, including road games with Kansas on Saturday, January 13 and West Virginia on Saturday, February 3 and a home date with Baylor to end the regular season on Saturday, March 3.

The Wildcats will also play at least 11 times on ESPNU, which includes the opener with Iowa State and the home opener with West Virginia, while there will be one appearance – a home game with Oklahoma State on Wednesday, January 10 – on ESPNews. The team’s road contests with Texas Tech (on Saturday, January 6) and Texas (on Wednesday, February 7) will appear on those school’s respective third-tier television platforms with specifics (times and television outlets) released at a later date.

After opening league play at Iowa State and with West Virginia at home, K-State will alternate between home and away venues over the next three games before hosting back-to-back home contests against Oklahoma (Tuesday, January 16) and TCU (Saturday, January 20) at Bramlage Coliseum. A home game against Oklahoma State on Wednesday, January 10 will be sandwiched between road trips to Texas Tech (Saturday, January 6) and Kansas (Saturday, January 13). Following the home games the Sooners and Horned Frogs, the Wildcats will conclude the first half of league play at Baylor on Monday, January 22.

Following a home game with Georgia in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on Saturday, January 27, K-State will open the second half of Big 12 play with the Big Monday home game against Kansas. After a two-game road swing at West Virginia (Saturday, February 3) and Texas (Wednesday, February 7), the team will host home games in three of the next four outings, including Texas Tech on Saturday, February 10, Iowa State on Saturday, February 17 and Texas on Wednesday, February 21 with a road game at Oklahoma State on Wednesday, February 14.

The regular season rounds out with two road games in its last three contest against Oklahoma (Saturday, February 24) and TCU (Tuesday, February 27) before Senior Day affair with Baylor set for Saturday, March 3. The Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship will be held Wednesday through Saturday, March 7-10, at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.

The Wildcats will return eight lettermen, including three players – Barry BrownKamau Stokes and Dean Wade – who started all 35 games for a Wildcat squad that won 21 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Brown and Stokes are the team’s top returning scorers with identical 11.7 points per game averages, while Stokes was the team leader in 3-point field goals (64), assists (4.1 apg.) and minutes (33.3 mpg.) in 2016-17. Brown set a single-season school record for steals with 82, while Wade averaged 9.3 points on nearly 50 percent shooting and is the team’s top returner in both rebounding (4.5 rpg.) and blocked shots (0.7 bpg.).

In addition, K-State will welcome seven newcomers (graduate transfer Mawdo Sallah, juniors Makol MawienPatrick Muldoonand Amaad Wainright and freshmen Mike McGuirlNigel Shadd and Levi Stockard III) as well as redshirt freshmen Cartier Diarra and James Love III, who both missed the 2016-17 season due to injury.

Season tickets for the 2017-18 season are currently on sale with a variety of pricing options available, including the return of the Big Game and Pick 5 Mini-Plans. Rays Defeat Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Logan Morrison, Steven Souza Jr. and Adeiny Hechavarria each went deep and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Wednesday night for their latest series victory.

The Rays took two out of three and have won three consecutive series. The Royals lost 18 of 28 games in August, including six of seven to end the month.

Morrison, who was born in Kansas City, has four home runs, eight RBIs and six runs in the first six games of Tampa Bay’s current road trip. Morrison hit his 33rd homer with two outs in the fifth against Jason Vargas (14-9).

Souza hit his 29th earlier in the fifth, snapping a 3-3 tie.

Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi (7-7), who failed to make it out of the fourth inning in his previous two starts, allowed three runs and four hits over five-plus innings.

Chiefs Trade for Offensive Lineman

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns have traded offensive lineman Cam Erving, a former first-round pick, to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cleveland is getting a fifth-round pick for Erving, the No. 19 overall selection in 2015 who was a disappointment for the Browns. They tried him at center, guard and tackle, but the 6-foot-5, 313-pounder struggled at each spot.

Erving has been sidelined with a calf injury in recent weeks and limited in practice.

He started 13 games last season, 12 at center and one at right tackle. Cleveland’s offensive line was ravaged by injuries last year, but the Browns still managed to finish second in the NFL by averaging 4.9 yards per attempt.

Erving made 42 consecutive starts at Florida State, where he started as a defensive lineman before moving to offensive tackle. Later, he was switched to center and played well for the Seminoles.

K-State Football Fans Alerted to Road Construction Projects in Manhattan

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Several road construction projects in Manhattan are likely to impact gameday traffic when K-State opens the football season on Saturday, and officials are advising fans to be patient as they travel to and from Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

Most notable of the ongoing projects is the construction of a diverging diamond interchange at the intersection of K-18 and K-113 (Seth Child). Northbound and southbound traffic on K-113 (Seth Child) has been reduced to one lane through the project area (roughly from K-18 on the south to Southwind Road on the north). Through traffic on K-18 is not impacted. Construction is expected to continue through the football season.

In west Manhattan, construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Scenic Drive and Anderson Avenue is open for traffic but not complete. City traffic and law enforcement officials are encouraging fans driving recreational or oversized vehicles to avoid using this route as the roadway is narrow in places. In addition, street improvements on Anderson from Hudson Street to Anneberg Park are ongoing. Traffic control is in place with lane shifts and speed reduction to 20 mph through the project area.

To the north of the stadium, Marlatt Avenue is closed between College Avenue and Denison Avenue as part of a two-phase project to widen Denison to a three-lane urban roadway with a 10-foot-wide bike path.

All parking lots around Bill Snyder Family Stadium open five hours prior to kickoff. Parking in the east and west lots of the stadium is reserved for members of the Ahearn Fund and requires a pass for entry.  Paid parking for fans with disabilities is available on a first-come, first-served basis in the east and west stadium lots. To gain entry, guests must display a state-issued accessible license plate or hangtag and present a disability card along with a form of personal identification. All other general public parking is limited to grass parking in Lot 9 east of the stadium, in the paved lot of the Peters Recreation Center, near the Equine Center north and east of the fire station on Denison Avenue or in private satellite lots and parking areas on campus. General public parking fees are $20 for cars.

To aid fans and students utilizing a ride-sharing or taxi service to this season’s football games, the K-State Student Governing Association has helped arrange a drop-off lane, Student Body President Jack Ayres has announced. The drop-off lane will be located near the stadium at southeast corner of Jardine Drive and Mid-Campus Drive (see map below). SGA initiated the concept and partnered with K-State Athletics, Housing and Dining Services, Parking Services and the K-State Police Department to provide this service.

Royals Win!

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Whit Merrifield, Jorge Bonifacio and Eric Hosmer homered as the Kansas City Royals snapped a 45-inning scoreless streak on the way to a 6-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday night.

Merrifield’s 16th home run with two outs in the third ended the Royals’ drought, three innings shy of the major league record. The 1906 Philadelphia Athletics and 1968 Chicago Cubs share the mark with 48 scoreless innings.

Hosmer’s three-run homer, his 22nd, in the seventh off left-hander Dan Jennings gave the Royals a cushion.

Bonifacio homered with two outs in the sixth off Alex Cobb (9-9).

Cobb gave up a run on three singles and three wild pitches in the fourth. Hosmer scored on Mike Moustakas’ single, but the Royals stranded runners at second and third.

K-State Football Weekly Press Conference Quotes
Head Coach Bill Snyder
On if preseason practices were different with multiple returning players…

“I do not think it has been tremendously different. I think there is a confidence level, but that is pretty consistent year in and year out. I have said so many times, my caution is not taking anything for granted. They have the experience and have been around for a while. A lot of guys have played a lot of minutes on the field, but every day is a new day. What we do today and what we did yesterday does not count much. It is not different at all. They have their hands full doing what they are doing and they go about their business. I have been pleased with how we are practicing. I think they are into it. They have been giving me the impression that they have not taken anything for granted. We are still working toward that daily improvement that we chat about all the time.”

On Denzel Goolsby earning a starting spot at safety…

“Number one, he is a very conscientious young man. Wherever you would play him, he would give you his best effort. He would do the extra thing you need to do in order to enhance your performance level. He has done that since he has been on the defensive side. We were looking for depth at the time, and he had the opportunity to move up the depth chart. I did not move him – I gave him the option if he wanted to move. I wanted him to do it, but again, I always let that be the decision of the player. He chose to do it and he did it for the right reasons. He thought he could help the football team and he was given what he might have felt was in his best interest. I think he realizes that it was a positive move for him.”

On center Reid Najvar being out for the season…

“It is never easy to lose a man. That is something that he loves and has been engrained in his life. All of a sudden to have it taken away from you is a difficult thing. For us, it is just a matter of moving on. It is the next man up and that is the nature of the game. If you have an injury on Saturday afternoon or Saturday evening then somebody has got to step up and go. It is not a matter of trying to figure out what can we do. It is just a matter of somebody has to step up and fill in and hold his own.”

On the depth at running back…

“Alex (Barnes) will be our starter, but all of them will play. I think there is a role for each and every one of them for the most part. That is probably the deepest position we have at this particular point in time. Justin (Silmon) has proven that he can play. We have seen some flashes with Dalvin Warmack, he has done a nice job. Mike McCoy has really come on as a young pup. He was on scout squad last year and he has really stepped up and proven that he can play and has the talent to do so. I think all of those youngsters will help us. All of them will have the opportunity to be on the field hopefully.”

On the backup quarterbacks …

“You know how I feel about Alex Delton; I have shared that with you a hundred times. He is a quality young man and a talented young player. We want to be able to utilize him and we will not just in the capacity where he lines up and runs the football. He can do more than that. (Skylar) Thompson and (Hunter) Hall are the next two in line. Both of them had pretty decent camps. There are still a few things that they have to do to become a little bit more knowledgeable about, as it relates to having the entire system at their hands. We will pick and choose what they do. Those are the things that we are comfortable with and that they are comfortable with.”

On having success running the ball…

“All of it is important. I do not think there is anything that we would attempt to do that is not significant or important in a ballgame. What is important to me is that we have the capacity to be able to have balance in our offense; that includes being able to run the ball well. I want people to be able to respect that we can run it when we can and we can throw it when we can. That being said, it makes it a little harder to defend against.”

On playing well in the first game of the season…

“We always want to play as well as we possibly can. Everybody talks about finishing, finishing, finishing, and I believe in that. You have to be well conditioned and physically strong enough and mentally tough enough to finish ballgames. It is equally as important to me that we start well. Coming out of the locker room – whether it is the special teams unit, kickoff return, kickoff, or defense – getting off to a good start is important. It is important to play extremely well, and obviously we want to play well all the way through. We talked to our players about the first five minutes of the first quarter and the second half is just as significant as the course of the ballgame.”

Sophomore Offensive Lineman Adam Holtorf
On playing center…

“I have been playing center since I arrived here. My first summer it was my primary position. Coach (Charlie) Dickey put me there and I have been working there predominately.”

On the toughest part of playing center…

“The mental aspect of it. The game plan in and out each week, you get a new defense that plays dramatically different. So, you have to be able to adjust and learn how we are going to block each defense a little bit differently.”

Junior Defensive Back D.J. Reed
On the potential of the defense…

“We can be really good. We have a lot of talent and depth. We just have to have fun, run to the ball, make plays and do everything within the defense scheme.”

On Central Arkansas’ offense…

“They are a good balanced team; they run the ball and also pass the ball. Their quarterback likes to scramble and make plays with his feet. They look pretty solid on film, so we cannot come in sleeping on them.”

On Denzel Goolsby earning a starting spot at safety…

“Denzel is another consistent person. He has been grinding with me since January. He deserves it. He’s been working very hard throughout the off season and camp.”

Junior Tight End Dayton Valentine
On Adam Holtorf taking over the starting center role…

“It was apparent he was the next guy up no matter what position it would be at on the line; if one of those guys went down, he would step right in there. He has prepared himself for that role.”

On the excitement for first game…

“We are just extremely excited for that first game. This year, it being a home game, we are excited to actually go out there and play in front of our fans.”

Senior Defensive Back Brogan Barry

On how he received the news of being put on scholarship…

“It was during a punt-return drill and I actually had a bad rep and kind of screwed it up, so I was kind of nervous. Then I hear Coach Sean Snyder call me over. He had told me, ‘If you haven’t already, you need to go down and fill out some paperwork for a scholarship.’ I said, ‘Are you serious?’ and he said, ‘Yes.’ I hugged him and I jumped up in the air. I had a bunch of guys around me and they hugged me and celebrated with me. It is a feeling you really cannot describe.”

On how gratifying he felt when receiving a scholarship…

“It really felt like my experience had come full circle. As a walk-on, it is that moment you always dream about and are working for every day.”

On his role models on the team…

“There is so many. If you go way back, Ty Zimmerman was a great guy that I looked up to as a freshman. Guys like Weston Hiebert, another walk-on that ended earning a scholarship. My roommate, Trent Tanking, has been another role model that I always looked up to. There are so many great people in this program, and I am sure I am leaving a bunch of people out.”
