Indians Defeat Royals, Celebrate AL Central Title

CLEVELAND (AP) — Corey Kluber pushed to the front of the Cy Young race with another dominant start and Edwin Encarnacion hit a two-run homer as the Cleveland Indians celebrated a division title and edged the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Sunday.

Kluber (17-4), who has lost once since July 4, allowed three singles in seven innings and has not given up a run in 22 straight innings.

Encarnacion homered in the fourth off Danny Duffy (8-9) as the Indians improved to 33-5 since Aug. 11 despite getting only three hits.

The Royals closed to 3-2 in the eighth on a two-out, two-run single by Brandon Moss off Tyler Olson. Cody Allen finished the inning and then worked out of a two-on jam in the ninth for his 28th save.

Before the game, Cleveland raised a flag to commemorate its second straight AL Central title. The team officially clinched Saturday night when second-place Minnesota lost to Toronto.

Chiefs Win!

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs rookie Kareem Hunt reached the end zone twice, Travis Kelce took a shovel pass 15 yards for the go-ahead touchdown and Kansas City held on to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-20 on Sunday.

Kelce’s touchdown catch with 6:25 left and Hunt’s second TD scamper appeared to have put the game away.

But Carson Wentz hit Nelson Agholor for an answering score with 14 seconds left, and Trey Burton jumped on the onside kick a few seconds later to give the Eagles one last throw to the end zone.

Wentz unloaded from just inside the 50-yard line, but his pass fell incomplete as time expired.

Kelce finished with 103 yards through the air, highlighted by his somersaulting score. Hunt had 81 yards on the ground, building on a record-setting debut in which he piled up 246 yards from scrimmage in a season-opening victory in New England .

Alex Smith had 251 yards passing for the Chiefs (2-0). Cairo Santos was 2 for 2 on field goals.

Wentz finished with 333 yards and two touchdowns passing, despite facing relentless pressure all afternoon. The spunky quarterback also led the Eagles (1-1) with 55 yards rushing.

It was 13-all in the fourth quarter and Philadelphia had the ball when Wentz threw a pass that bounced off the Chiefs’ Justin Houston and into the arms of Chris Jones. The pick gave Kansas City the ball deep in Eagles territory, and Kelce hurdled into the end zone five plays later.

It was sweet atonement for the talented but troublemaking tight end, who earlier in the half got an earful from coach Andy Reid when he picked up a 15-yard penalty for taunting.

The Chiefs’ defense, missing star safety Eric Berry to a season-ending injury, kept the Eagles in check most of the game — and for good reason. They’re coached by Doug Pederson , who spent several years as the offensive coordinator in Kansas City and took the same system with him to Philadelphia.

JONES-ING: Along with his interception, Jones also piled up three sacks in a dominant performance for the second-year pro. The Chiefs’ defensive tackle even left briefly in the second half and appeared to be checked for a concussion before returning to the field.

GETTING COMFY: After struggling last week against Washington, Alshon Jeffery appeared to get on the same page with Wentz at Arrowhead Stadium. He finished with seven catches for 92 yards.

ERTZ-WHILE: Eagles tight end Zach Ertz had five catches for 97 yards, including a 53-yard catch late in the first half that ricocheted off the Chiefs’ Terrance Mitchell. That play appeared to have set up a chip-shot field goal, but Jake Elliott’s attempt missed as the half expired .

CLIPPED WINGS: The Eagles’ ailing secondary lost two more players when starting safety Rodney McLeod and backup cornerback Jaylen Watkins left with hamstring injuries in the first half. Philadelphia was already without starting cornerback Ronald Darby because of a dislocated ankle.

NAMING RIGHTS: The Chiefs renamed the TV booths at Arrowhead Stadium in honor of Len Dawson, their Hall of Fame quarterback and broadcaster. He is retiring from doing radio analysis after the season.

Kansas State Loses at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Kyle Shurmur scored on a 2-yard run with 8:23 left, and Vanderbilt upset No. 18 Kansas State 14-7 on Saturday night for the Commodores’ first win over a ranked, nonconference opponent since 1946.

With the win, Vanderbilt improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2011 with the Commodores’ first win over a ranked, nonconference opponent since beating North Carolina State. The Commodores also have won five straight at home dating back to last season.

Kansas State (2-1) last beat a Southeastern Conference team on the road in the regular season in 1982 at Kentucky.

Senior quarterback Jesse Ertz tried to drive the Wildcats to the tying score. But he was tackled short on fourth-and-8 deep in Vanderbilt territory by Oren Burks and LaDarius Wiley with 1:06 left.

D.J. Reed of the Wildcats had not one, but two touchdowns wiped out. He picked up a fumble by Shurmur and ran 35 yards to the end zone in the second quarter. Replay review ruled Shurmur was down before the ball came out. In the final seconds of the third quarter, Reed returned a punt for a TD that was wiped out by an illegal block in the back.

Those weren’t the only points Kansas State missed. Matthew McCrane’s 42-yard field goal late in the third quarter went just wide right.

Shurmur drove the Commodores 84 yards using up half of the first quarter to put Vanderbilt up 7-0 with a 2-yard pass to C.J. Duncan.

Ertz answered for Kansas State with a 75-yard drive, and on fourth-and-1, Ertz took the ball wide left and ran untouched for a 15-yard TD.

Wiley intercepted a pass tipped by Joejuan Williams early in the fourth quarter, putting the Commodores at the Kansas State 39 off the first interception of Ertz this season. Vanderbilt had first-and-10 at the Kansas State 11 when Ralph Webb, the Commodores’ all-time leading rusher, fumbled, Wildcats linebacker Elijah Sullivan recovering with 11:20 left.

Senior Ryan White picked off Ertz soon after at the Wildcats 33, and Vanderbilt needed only four plays before Shurmur scored the clinching TD.

THE TAKEAWAY

Kansas State: Ertz ran early and often for the Wildcats, piling up 81 yards on his first seven carries, including a 15-yard TD run on fourth-and-1. But the Commodores made an adjustment, and he finished with 126 yards on 24 carries. Vanderbilt also kept the dual-threat quarterback from hurting it through the air, holding him to 76 yards and sacking him twice.

Vanderbilt: The Commodores now have allowed only 13 points this season, and they smothered an offense that scored 55 points in each of its first two games.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

The Wildcats might not fall out of the rankings with No. 23 Tennessee and No. 25 UCLA both losing. This win might be enough for Vanderbilt to be ranked for the first time in coach Derek Mason’s tenure.

Kansas State: Hosts Baylor.

Vanderbilt: Hosts top-ranked Alabama.

Indians Close in On American League Central Title with Win Over Royals

CLEVELAND (AP) — Francisco Lindor hit an RBI double and the Cleveland Indians bounced back after having their record streak stopped at 22 by beating the Kansas City Royals 8-4 on Saturday to move to the brink of an AL Central title.

Lindor’s double in the sixth off Jason Hammel (8-12) gave the All-Star shortstop an extra-base hit in a club-record 10 straight games. The major league record is 14 straight, shared by Chipper Jones (2006) and Paul Waner (1927).

Carlos Carrasco (16-6) pitched into the seventh as the Indians improved to 32-5 in their last 37 games.

With the win, the Indians clinched at least a tie for the division and dropped their magic number for repeating as champs to one. If Minnesota loses later at home against Toronto, Cleveland will clinch and take the next step in getting back to the World Series.

A victory by the Twins would mean the Indians could lock up the division on Sunday, when ace and Cy Young co-favorite Corey Kluber starts the finale of the season’s longest homestand at Progressive Field.

Jayhawks Fall at Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio (AP) — Nathan Rourke threw for 152 yards and two touchdowns as Ohio defeated Kansas 42-30 on Saturday, extending the Jayhawks‘ road losing streak to 42 games, the longest active streak in the nation.

Rourke earned his first start against the Jayhawks (1-2) after shining in the first two games of the season.

Rourke succeeded Quinton Maxwell as starting quarterback but both played, as planned, and both had success. Maxwell entered the game in the middle of the second quarter, and he completed 4 of 5 passes, including a 9-yard score to Mangen, his second of the season.

The Jayhawks couldn’t contain Rourke, who is deft at evading the rush. The Jayhawks, ranked No. 7 in the Big 12 for total yards allowed per game, gave up 450 total yards to the Bobcats (2-1).

Trailing 39-14 after three quarters, Kansas‘ Peyton Bender passed 1 yard to Jeremiah Booker early the fourth and Gabriel Rui added a 34-yard field goal with 5:35 remaining to cut the deficit to 39-24. But Louie Zervos padded the lead with a 46-yard field goal before Kansas scored a touchdown on the game’s final play.

Jayhawks running back Khalil Herbert ran for two touchdowns and finished with 137 yards rushing. Bender threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns. His offensive line struggled, allowing five sacks.

THE TAKEAWAY

Ohio: The Bobcats used both of their quarterbacks, which was expected. But what was not totally expected was Maxwell’s solid play in the second quarter. Rourke shined again, but Maxwell didn’t waver. As coach Scott Isphording said, the Bobcats have two good quarterbacks, and that’s a good thing for them.

Kansas: The road losing streak continues. The Jayhawks again struggled to defend, which has been a problem this season.

UP NEXT

Ohio: The Bobcats play next Saturday at Eastern Michigan.

KansasKansas is host to West Virginia next Saturday.

Royals Snap Cleveland Winning Streak

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians can return to clinching their division and playoff preparations.

Their historic winning streak is, well, history.

Cleveland had its AL record run stopped at 22 straight games on Friday night as the Indians were beaten 4-3 by the Kansas City Royals, who became the first team to conquer the defending league champions since Aug. 23.

Jason Vargas (16-10) pitched into the sixth and Brandon Moss homered off Trevor Bauer (16-9) as the Royals ended baseball’s longest win streak in 101 years. The Indians set a new league mark and came within four of matching the overall record held by the 1916 New York Giants.

Following a magical, walk-off win in extra innings on Thursday night, the Indians couldn’t muster another late rally and fell for the first time in more than three weeks.

When Francisco Lindor struck out with a runner on first to end it, the packed crowd gave the Indians a prolonged standing ovation. Manager Terry Francona and the Cleveland players came out of the dugout to salute their fans.

Blue Jays Roll Past Topeka West

The Junction City Blue Jays ( 1-2 )  scored 10 touchdowns enroute to a 60-21 win over the Topeka West Chargers ( 0-3 ) Friday night in the capitol city.

The Blue Jays jumped out first on a three yard scoring run by Baylor Wilkey but the Chargers tied the game on a six yard touchdown run by Hunter McDaniel. From there the Blue Jays scored three straight touchdowns to take the lead for good. Junction City quarterback Rooster Adams rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another score in the victory.

The Blue Jays host Washburn Rural next Friday.
