Steven Allen Rohrer

Steven Allen Rohrer, 43, was called to his heavenly home Saturday, May 18, 2019 after a hard-fought battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.
He was born February 4, 1976 in Normal, Illinois, the son of David and Mary (Carlson) Rohrer. He lived his whole life in the Hope area, attended the local schools, and graduated from Hope High in 1994. On March 16, 2002 he was united in marriage to Dawn Heublein at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Salina. Steven was a lifetime farmer, stockman, and cattleman. Steven was also an avid fan of the Kansas State Wildcats and Kansas City Chiefs. His favorite past time was spending time with his son, Cooper, taking Saturday morning trips to the Dillon COOP together. He was a member of both the Banner Township Board and the Turkey Creek Watershed Board.
Steven is survived by his loving wife Dawn and son, Cooper, of the home. Parents: David and Mary Rohrer of Hope. Brother: Daniel Rohrer and wife Tammy of Mayetta, Kansas and their son, McCauley. Sister: Christa Rohrer of St. Cloud, Florida. Mother-in-Law and Father-in-Law Lynn and Ron Anderson of Dwight, Kansas and Father-in-Law John Heublein of Salina.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; Emil and Esther Carlson and John and Esther Rohrer.
Funeral Services for Steven will be 10:30 A.M., Thursday, May 23, 2019 at the Carlton School House with Pastor Justin McKee officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, rural Carlton. Family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene. Memorials may be given to the Cooper Rohrer Education Fund. Gertrude “Trudie” (Foltz) Hoffman

Trudie (Foltz) Hoffman, 81, of Westmoreland, Kansas, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2019 in Manhattan following a short illness.

Trudie was born July 11, 1937 in Manhattan, Kansas, the daughter of Vernon and Pauline (Jermark) Foltz.  She graduated from Manhattan High School in 1955 and Kansas State University in 1959, earning a degree in Chemistry.

During college, she worked at College Drug in Aggieville and that is where she met her future husband, Bill Hoffman, who was a pharmaceutical drug rep for Merck, Sharp, and Dome at the time.  Trudie and Bill had their first date on April Fool’s Day 1958 and were married on December 20, 1958, and were married more than 57 wonderful years.

Trudie spent the next several years as a full-time mom raising their 6 children who were all born between 1960 and 1970!  She could cook, sew, manage the household and the pharmacy, maintain the yard and run the pool- She could do it all!

In 1968, the Hoffman family moved from Manhattan to Westmoreland where Trudie and Bill owned and operated Hoffman Pharmacy until June of 2016.  During the 1970’s, Trudie also taught chemistry at Kansas State University.

Trudie returned to the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy where she graduated in December of 1982.  She worked for many years at St. Mary’s Hospital in Manhattan as well as Wamego Drug Store.  All the while helping Bill at the pharmacy and raising her 6 children.

She was a long-time member of the Westmoreland Methodist Church, the Westy Service Club, and the Rock Creek Valley Historical Society.  She was a former Westmoreland City Council member and worked on the Pottawatomie County Zoning Board for many years.

Trudie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill Hoffman, her parents and her sister, Danna Hitch, her nephew, Ken Hitch.

Trudie is survived by her six children:  Jean Bramwell (Jon), Kay Tomasu (Robert), Mary Hoffman, Nancy Vanderpool (Troy), Skip Hoffman (Angela), Keith Hoffman (Kate).  15 grandchildren:  Kevin Tomasu (Laurissa), Melissa Burdick (Wes), Taryn Schuknecht (Greg), Lisa Tomasu, Jacob and Amanda Morgan, Megan and Madison Vanderpool, Raeann Hoffman Luke and Nick Hoffman, Mark, Brett, Drew, and Laura Hoffman, her brother, Paul Foltz, and one great grandchild, Benson, two nephews, Dan and Ed Hitch, and two nieces, Kaylee Myers and Shellee Brokenicky.

We love you and will miss you so much.

Memorial service for Trudie will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Westmoreland.  The family has suggested memorials to the Rock Creek Valley Historical Society, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego, PO Box 48, 66547.

Irene Emma Lou Finley

Irene Emma Lou Finley departed this life on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at the Legacy of Herington, Kansas.  She was the daughter of Ralph William and Pearl Irene (Knopp) Latzke.  She was born August 10, 1930, at Junction City.   She was raised in the Lyona area with her two sisters, Elaine and Millicent.

Irene graduated from Chapman High School with the class of 1948.  She attended Kansas Wesleyan University a couple of years and then taught at a one room school house near Lyona. She married Robert H. Finley, February 23, 1951, at the Lyona Methodist Church. They were the parents of four children, Ralph, Mary, Kathleen, and John. Early in her marriage she raised and sold German shepherds and then some time later raised shelties. She was very active and involved with her children.  She raised cucumbers, tomatoes, and other garden vegetables. She canned them and made them last through the winter until the next season.   She taught her children the importance of being self-sufficient and how to live off the land.

Her heart was deeply saddened the night of June 10, 1976, when a sudden thunderstorm moved in.  Her nineteen year old son, John, would perish due to injuries received in a motorcycle accident.  She and her husband, Bob, were married 62 years when he preceded in death on May 8, 2013; she is also preceded in death by her sister, Millicent Kind; and her parents.

She is survived by a son, Ralph Finley, and his wife Donna of Chapman; two daughters, Mary McIntyre, husband Blake of Osage City, Kathleen Svitak, husband Randy of Pilsen;  a sister, Elaine Rucker, husband John of Junction City; brother-in-law, Billy Kind of Chapman; six grandchildren, Christopher, Joseph, Nicholas, Daniel, Damien, Shane; and 13 great grandchildren Emily, Hannah, Molly, Ella, Nathaniel, Ethan, Leah, Daniela, Shania, Payton, Jonah, Katelyn, and Rebecca (two of who were adopted).

Memorials have been designated to Lyona Methodist Church or the Hospice of Dickinson County; and may be sent in care of Zeiner Funeral Home-Herington Chapel, 404 S. Broadway, Herington, KS, 67449-3038.

Clide “Elaine” (Grover) Dannelley

Clide “Elaine” (Grover) Dannelley, 83 of Abilene passed away Thursday, May 2, 2019 after a short illness at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka.

She was born October 23, 1935 in Montour Falls, NY; the daughter of Clyde and Agnes (Rumsey) Grover. She is preceded in death by her first husband Donald R. Dannelley, second husband; Fred A. Davis and one brother, Chester Grover.

Surviving are her children: Wendy Fielder and husband Jesse of Abilene; Maxine Smith of Marion, SD. Grandchildren: Holly White and husband Casey of Lincoln, NE and Kimberlie Knust of Lincoln, NE. Great-grandchildren: Jillian White, Alana Knust, Gauge Knust and one step-great-grandchild, McKenzie White. Siblings: John Grover, Leo Grover, Ella Detrick, Marie Wilcox and Peggy Dannelley.
Elaine earned her Bachelors of Science Degree at Elmira College in NY and she taught elementary science at Knightsen Elementary School in California up to her retirement. She was also a member of The American Legion for over 50 years. She started later in life but began showing horses around the age of 50 and she loved every minute of it. Among many other accomplishments and talents; she was an avid lover of animals and horses and still had a small farm at the time of her death.

The family has chosen cremation and will have a private celebration of life at a later date. Elaine will be buried next to her first husband Donald in California. The family suggests memorials be given to the Abilene Public Library or the First United Methodist Church of Abilene. Melissa Marie Johnson, 30, of Wamego, KS passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2019 in Wamego.

A gathering of friends and family to celebrate Melissa’s life will be from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Sunday, May 19, 2019 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego.

Charles Anthony Heerey

Charles Anthony Heerey was born August 20, 1932, in Hillsboro, Kansas, the son of Charles J. and Mary S. (Bruemmer) Heerey. He grew up on a farm near Aulne and attended grade school in a one-room rural schoolhouse. After working two years on the family farm, he went to high school and graduated from Marion High School in 1951. Charles married Virginia Louise Winter the day after Christmas in 1953. A few weeks later, he left for Frankfurt Germany as a member of the US Army during the post-WWII occupation where he served in the Transportation Division.

Charles worked for the U.S. Postal Service for thirty years both in Marion and Wichita, Kansas. He also worked as an electrician in the evenings and on weekends and later as a real estate agent. Charles both wired and sold many of the homes in the local area.

Charles served on the board of Hilltop Manor for twenty-five years (including serving as board chair), was a member of the VFW and volunteered at the St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary Shoppe. He and his wife enjoyed traveling including many family vacations, a 50th wedding anniversary trip with their entire family to Hawaii, the International Balloon Festival in New Mexico and a trip to Alaska. Charles was known for his orneriness, practical jokes and witty sense of humor.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, John Heerey, and sisters Agnes McEachern and Catherine Wedeman. He leaves behind his wife of 65 years, sons Brad (Rhonda) Heerey of Wichita and Doug (Lori) Heerey of Marion and daughter Cindy (Chuck) McSwain of Wichita. Additionally, survivors include eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include brother Ben (Colleen) Heerey of Tucson, AZ, and sisters Bridget Rowland of Wichita, Pat Pascoe of Agoura Hills, CA and Joan Bucheit of Granbury, TX. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Marion PRIDE, a memorial set up to help provide American flags and flag poles for Marion Main Street.

Eleanor Cynthia Collier

Alta Vista – Eleanor Cynthia Collier, 93, of Alta Vista, Kansas, passed away May 15, 2019, at the Morris County Hospital.

She was born April 30, 1926, the daughter of Elbert and Ada (Perry) Lowdermilk in Denver, CO. She married James McDonald Collier on June 16, 1946. They had 3 children: Valerie, Stuart and John.

Eleanor was a member of United Methodist Church, PEO, Neota Club, Score & Four, Chamber of Commerce and Morris County 4-H Foundation. She owned and operated Eleanor’s Card & Party Shop for 22 years. When her children were growing up, she was a children’s’ Sunday school teacher, she sang in the church choir and was a 4-H Club clothing and knitting leader. She was also a Grand Marshall of the Washunga Days Parade. She enjoyed knitting, sewing and cooking. Eleanor loved spending time with her family and was proud of each and every one of them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James and sisters Phyllis and Elberta.

Eleanor is survived by her children: Valerie Woodall (Jeff), of Council Grove, Stuart Collier, of Wichita, and John Collier (Kris), of Alta Vista; grandchildren: Andrew Collier, Ryan Collier, Chris Collier, Rachel Jones (Nick) and Amanda Graves (Tyler); step-grandchildren: Chadd Woodall, Jeffery Woodall (Willow), Corey Krick, Ryan Moss (Katie) and Brandon Dugan; great-grandchildren: Vivianna Jones and Charles Graves; step-great-grandchildren: Sarah, Jake and Max Krick, Scarlett and Clarkson Woodall and Georgia Moss.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at Council Grove/Dunlap United Methodist Church.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 22nd, at 10:00am, also at the Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, rural Morris County.

Harvey Walker

Harvey Walker, 88 of Hope passed away Sunday, May 12, 2019.

He was born May 21, 1930 in Clayton, New Mexico, the son of DeWitt and Clora (Amos) Walker. He grew to manhood in the Clayton, New Mexico, attended the local schools and graduated from Clayton High School. He served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1961. On December 2, 1953 he was united in marriage to Glendyll Nikkel in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They moved to Hope in 1973. She preceded him in death November 4, 1995. Harvey was a rancher/farmer and was a member of the Abilene Elks, Abilene Historical Society and KLA.

He is survived by three sons: Russell Walker of Nebraska; Randall Walker of Hope; Ronald Walker of Florida. Two daughters: Valerie Keller of Kansas City and Trudy Renner of Wichita. Nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and special friend, Deanna Whitehair.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters, wife Glendyll Walker and a grandson, Rusty Walker.

Funeral services for Harvey will be 2:00 P.M., Monday, May 20, 2019 at Carlson-Becker Funeral Home in Hope with Pastor Stan Norman officiating. Burial will follow at Ashton Cemetery. Family will receive friends Sunday, May 19 from 3-5 at Carlson-Becker Funeral Home in Hope. Friends may come by Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene from 9:00 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday, May 17 to view and sign the register book. Elmer Willmann

Elmer Willmann, 90, Clay Center,  died May 15, 2019.  He was born September 2, 1928 the son of Henry and Esther (Fritz) Willmann.  Elmer grew up and attended school in Clay Center.  He farmed with his parents and, in 1938, he was the youngest farmer in Clay County. Elmer married Dorothy Beichter on April 8, 1951 and she preceded him in death on November 16, 2004.  He also worked as a truck driver and night supervisor for Gilmore-Tatge and a truck driver for Hutchinson/Mayrath.  Elmer was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clay Center.   He is also preceded in death by his parents.

Richard (Dick) Wayne O’Neil

Richard (Dick) Wayne O’Neil, 68, Manhattan, died at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, KS on Tuesday, May 14, 2019, after fighting a short battle with brain cancer.

Richard was born on June 22, 1950 in Axtell, KS and grew up in Beattie, KS. He graduated in 1968 from Marysville High School. Richard attended Hutchinson Community College to play football and then moved to Manhattan, KS in 1969 where he resided until his death.

He is survived by his five children, David (and Mary) O’Neil, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Wes (and Kaisha) O’Neil, Olathe, KS, Erin O’Neil, Manhattan, KS, Kelli O’Neil, Manhattan, KS, and Lydia (and Bryce) Huninghake, Manhattan, KS; his siblings, Patty (and Joe) Germer, Marysville, KS, Ron (and Laura) O’Neil, Beattie, KS, Deb O’Neil, Topeka, KS, and Jane (and JP) Kuchera, Wamego, KS; and ten grandchildren, Rhiannon, Logan, and Molly O’Neil, Greyson, Hunter, and Colter O’Neil, Moses McFadden, and Retley, Ellie, and Perry Huninghake.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, James and Lilly (Butler) O’Neil; siblings, Michael O’Neil, and Sharon (O’Neil) McCullough; and stepfather, Lawrence Graham.

Richard worked at Rex’s Tire prior to working at Standard Plumbing, where he worked until he retired in 2016.

Richard loved K-State sports, especially football and going to the Big 12 basketball tournament. His love of sports only continued when he coached many years of fastpitch softball. Richard often hiked in Colorado and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and bird watching. After his retirement, he took full advantage of spending time with his five kids and most importantly, his ten grandchildren, who will miss him dearly.

A Vigil Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Sunday May 19, 2019 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel. The family will greet friends following the Vigil on Sunday until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday May, 2019 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan, with Father Kerry Ninemire and Father Gale Hammerschmidt as Celebrants. Interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the St. Patrick’s/ St. Malachy’s Cemetery in Beattie, with Father Nathan Haverkamp officiating.

The Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502, is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements.
