Maurice D. Shields – Age 93

Maurice’s life began on October 2, 1925, in Arnett, OK.  He is the son of Rollin D. and Vivian (Snearey) Shields.  Maurice served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II from 1943 until 1947.  He worked in the aircraft manufacturing industry as an engineer.  Maurice was united in marriage to the former Mary Elizabeth “Liz” Miller in Woodward County, Oklahoma.  He was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church and a member of the Whitewater American Legion.  Maurice’s greatest joy was his family which includes sons Maurice “MD” Shields of Wichita and Randy Shields of Potwin; grandchildren Lore Case of Tescoff, Taylor Dean Shields of Hays, great-grandchildren Kortnei Kerby of Salina, and Josh Downey of Tescoff; and great-great-grandchildren Madisyn Trillett and Pyper Kerby, both of Salina.  Maurice passed away on June 3, 2019, at Larksfield Place in Wichita. He is preceded in death by his parents, and wife Liz.

His family will gather with friends on Tuesday, June 11 from 6-8 p.m. at Lamb Funeral Home, Whitewater.  His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12 at the Federated Church, Whitewater led by Pastor Jason Lowery.  Maurice will be laid to rest in Whitewater Cemetery with military honors.  Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to the Federated Church or Wounded Warriors Project.

Christina B. Beauford

Christina B. Beauford, 72, of Junction City, died Saturday, June 1, 2019 at her home. Christina was born on Ft. Riley on September 16, 1946, the daughter of Calvin C. and Lorene E. (Freeman) Mason.

Christina was raised in Junction City and graduated in 1964 from Junction City High School. She later received her Associates Degree from Central Texas College.

Christina worked Civil Service on Ft. Riley as a Conservation Specialist for 30 years. She had served as Head Steward for the Ft. Riley Union.

She married Robert Beauford on May 04, 1981 in Junction City. Robert survives of the home. Other survivors include: 2 sons, Cliff A. Townsend, Manhattan, and Victor D. Camese, Oklahoma City, Okla.; 2 daughters, Tonya Lorene Archie and her husband Claude Archie, Deltona, Florida, and Kimberlie Kristina Jones and her wife Reba Jones, Wichita; a brother, Larry Hester, Topeka; 2 sisters, Paulette Orth and Candice Christian, both of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 9 grandchildren, Corey C. Lucas, Calvin Camese, Brittaney Johnson, Breahnna Camese, Justen Jones, Alexis Camese, Brannon Jones, Bacari Camese, and Victoria Archie; 8 great grandchildren; one nephew, Halilha Orth; 3 nieces, Kyla, Kyra, and Kristian Smith; 3 great nieces; and 1 great nephew.

Christina was preceded in death by her parents, and a daughter, Angela Camese.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the Johnson Funeral Home, with Pastor Dusty Young presiding. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Friday evening, June 7, 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Donna L. Brumm

Donna L. Brumm, 90, of Hillsboro, KS, formerly of Junction City,KS, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at Salem Home in Hillsboro. Cremation has taken place. Private family inurnment will take place at Highland Cemetery in Junction City.

She was born on June 30, 1928, the daughter of Fred and Marie (Moss) Brumm.

Donna worked many years for Capital Federal Savings in Topeka, KS. She later worked for her nephew Kevin Blackwell with Kevin Blackwell Trucking.

Donna is survived by nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.

Emy Lou Peterson

Funeral services for Emy Lou Peterson, age 92, of Abilene, Formerly of Salina will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2019 at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene with Reverend Gordon McClure officiating. Mrs. Peterson passed away Monday, June 3, 2019 at the Memorial Hospital in Abilene.

She was born February 3, 1927 in Osborne, Kansas the daughter of Lester and Emma (Nunn) Burkholder. Emy Lou had been a longtime Salina resident graduating from Salina High School.

Emy Lou was an active member of the Salina Bible Church, enjoyed cooking, doing arts and crafts and loved being a part of her children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

On August 7, 1947 she was united in marriage to Kenneth Peterson. They had two children, a son Kenneth Lynn Peterson of Abilene, and daughter Carolyn Sue Gregg and her husband Reggie of Adrian, Missouri; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Lowell Burkholder and her sister Caryl Tucker.

The family has selected cremation and a private family graveside service will take place at a later date.  Emy Lou’s family will receive friend from 1:15 p.m. until the 2 p.m. service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gideons, Dickinson County Home Health and Hospice, or to the Mission or Missionary of choice and may be sent in care of the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene, Kansas 67410.

 

Donna Mae Kaufman Jarmer

Donna Mae Kaufman Jarmer, 84, passed away on May 29, 2019 at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, KS surrounded by her family.

Donna’s grandparents immigrated to the United States from Russia with a Mennonite Group. This group eventually came to settle in Pretty Prairie, Kansas. This group also brought winter wheat to the area. Donna was born to Albert and Anna Kauffman at the family home in Pretty Prairie on July 16, 1934.

After graduating from Pretty Prairie High School, Donna later met Paul Jarmer. They married June 1, 1956 and moved to Chapman to be close to Paul’s employment at Fort Riley. In Chapman they raised their four children, Debbie, Greg, Steve and Sandy.

Her interests and passions show who Donna truly was. Family was first and foremost for Donna. She enjoyed being with her children and grandchildren and was so proud of each of them.  Faith was an important part of her life. She was Mennonite but in her adult years she was a member of Chapman United Methodist Church all the years she lived in Chapman. Donna loved working with the elderly and this showed in her 35 years at Chapman Valley Manor.  After retiring Donna continued her lifelong friendships with her co-workers and would have weekly breakfast gatherings and also would celebrate birthday’s  as well.

She is survived by her three children, son Steve Jarmer, Manhattan, KS and daughters Debbie (James) Templeton, Grand Rapids, MI and Sandy (Jeri) Hynek, Manhattan, KS; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren; sister Marge Kaufman and brother Vic Kaufman both of Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Jarmer; son Greg Jarmer; a granddaughter, her parents  and six siblings.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., June 5, 2019 at Londeen Funeral Home, 206 W. 5th, Chapman, KS.  Reverend Connie Wooldridge officiating and  Reverend Ken Trickle assisting.

Donna’s finally resting place will be at Indian Hill Cemetery in Chapman, KS.

Fredrick Carroll Schraeder

Council Grove – Fredrick Carroll Schraeder passed from this life to be with the Lord Saturday, June 1, 2019.  He was born February 16, 1938 in St. Marys, Kansas to Fred C. and Regina Matilda (Allen).  Survivors include sons Tharon and wife Misty of Council Grove, KS; Jeffrey, Bailey Island, Maine; and Michael of Overland Park, Kansas, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.  Mr. Schraeder was preceded in death by his wife Laura, daughter Lisa, brother Thomas, and father and mother.

In 1964, Carroll and his family moved to Council Grove where he became the first General Manager and helped build Tri-County Telephone Association from roughly 600 subscribers to in excess of 3,400 and thirteen exchanges before his retirement in 1999.  During his tenure at Tri-County he was also very active in state and national telecom associations serving as President, board member, or committee member for organizations such as State Independent Telephone Association, Kansas Telephone Association, National Telephone Cooperative Association, and Western Rural Telephone Association.  In 1988 when wireless service was in its infancy, Carroll entered Tri-County Telephone into the wireless arena becoming an integral part of the newly formed Liberty Cellular company as a director.  Liberty grew from a startup to more than 150,000 subscribers and was subsequently bought by Alltel 10 years later for more than $517 million and is now known as Verizon Wireless.  Additionally, shortly before his retirement in 1999 Mr. Schraeder was instrumental in helping construct the acquisition of Council Grove Telephone Company by Tri-County Telephone (TCT).

Mr. Schraeder was an avid golfer and member of Council Grove Country Club serving as both a committee member and past President.  He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, travel, spending time with his grand children and watching football and basketball games.  He and his wife Laura were loyal Kansas State fans and held season tickets to Wildcat football for many years.

Mr. Schraeder is also survived by brother William of Louisville, KY; brother Edward and friend Jane of Topeka, KS; sister Teresa of St. Marys; sister Isabelle (husband Richard Simecka), Topeka, KS; sister Rose Mary (husband Robert Murry), Topeka, KS; and sister Mary Alice, Shawnee, KS.

Funeral services for Mr. Schraeder will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, June 7 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Council Grove, KS.  Mr. Schraeder chose to be cremated.  Contributions can be made to the Morris County Hospital and sent to Zeiner Funeral Home, Box 273, Council Grove, KS 66846.

Mark Edward Ruthstrom

Mark Edward Ruthstrom, age 73 of Manhattan and formerly of Clay Center, died Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

He was born on October 14, 1945 in Manhattan to Leroy and Evelyn (Rosell) Ruthstrom and grew up in the Walsburg area. He had many great memories of his life on the farm. He attended grade school in Leonardville and graduated from Riley County High School with the class of 1963.

Mark worked as a beef nutritionist for fifty-two years. He enjoyed visiting with his customers and in turn, made many great friends. Mark’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his wife, kids, and grandkids.  Mark also treasured his friendships with his old school mates and before he took ill, they met up for coffee, sharing many stories of their days growing up in Riley County, Kansas.

Mark married the love of his life and soulmate Sandra Kearn on September 12, 2009. He is survived by his wife, Sandra of the home; sons Ben (Krista) Ruthstrom, Osborne, and Jonathan (Jessica) Ruthstrom, Mankato; daughters, Amy (Gary) Feigley of Enterprise, Kristin (Ervin) Underwood of Burr Oak, Mellissa (Laine) Rundus of Manhattan and Mary Ann (Roger) Meier of Mankato; fourteen grandchildren, Alexys, Alexa, Samuel, Jacob, Roger Jr.,Trinity, Taygen, Annika, Aaron, Henry, Allison, Emma, Jonathan, and Makinzy and his sister-in-law, Lynn Ruthstrom.

Mark was preceeded in death by his parents, and his older brother, Rodney.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the funeral home.  Final resting place will be in the Walsburg Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Katie’s Way in Manhattan or to the Walsburg Lutheran Church.  Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Tina Lynn Lehner

Tina Lynn Lehner, 48 of Junction City passed away Friday, May 31, 2019. She was born April 14, 1971 in Junction City, the daughter of Lawrence and Chassie (Foster) Lehner. Tina grew up in the Chapman/Abilene area and attended Chapman school district.
She is survived by two sisters, Lesley Heath (Lon Faidley) of Solomon and Gladys Lehner of Osage City. Fiancé, Daryl Woods of Junction City, four nephews and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
The family has chosen cremation. A graveside memorial service will be 10:00 A.M., Friday, June 7, 2019 at Prairiedale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6-8 pm at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene. The family suggests memorials be given to the St. Croix Hospice of Hiawatha, Kansas. Memorials may be dropped off or mailed to Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW Third St., Abilene, Kansas 67410.

Georgia M. Shinski

Georgia M. Shinski of Lenexa, formerly of Wamego, Kansas passed away June 1, 2019 following a short illness. Georgia was born May 18, 1921 to George and Belle (Simon) Miller in Pottawatomie County, KS. She attended Star Union School (a one room rural school), Riley Elementary, and graduated from Riley Rural High School in 1939. Georgia worked for the Riley Regent Newspaper and the Riley Telephone Company. She marriedCharles D. Shinski in Yuma, Arizona in July of 1940. Charles served in the Coast Guard during WWII and was stationed at Pearl Harbor and the Aleutian Islands. Charles and Georgia lived most of their lives in Wamego and Manhattan, KS.

Georgia moved to Lenexa, KS from Manhattan, KS in January 2016 to be near her family. She lived avery full life and was fiercely independent and witty until the end. She was dedicated to her family. She was always the first to be there when a family member or friend needed her. She enjoyed visiting withher family and friends and always had a smile for everyone. In earlier years she enjoyed sewing,gardening and working outdoors. She loved reading books and liked to follow K-State football. She will be remembered for her kindness and will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and in June of 1999, by her husband Charles. She is survivedby her son Clifford W. Shinski and his wife Shari of Overland Park, KS; two grandchildren, Tracy L. Hawkins and her husband Matthew of Gretna, NE, and Charles A. Shinski and his wife Danae of Olathe, KS; five great-grandchildren, Shelby, Dalton and Seth Hawkins, and Adam and Simon Shinski.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, June 6, 2019 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Visitation of life will be held from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. with the service following visitation. Graveside service will be at the Wamego Cemetery. A light lunch will follow.

Dick Edwards

Dick Edwards, age 83, died on Sunday June 2, 2019 at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital, Manhattan, Kansas.

He was born on December 9, 1935 in Holdenville, Oklahoma the son of Virgil L. and Eva (Robinson) Edwards. At an early age, he worked on the family farm where he learned his tremendous work ethic. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1958 and served his country honorably for the next two years. Following the Army, he drove trucks, worked on the pipeline & on May 13, 1963 he started selling cars at the Augusta Ford Dealership. Dick later worked at Rusty Eck’s until 1981, then he started Dick Edwards Ford on January 1, 1981. To this day, he still went to work everyday at the dealership in Junction City.

On December 27, 1958, he was united in marriage to Janice Governski in El Dorado, Kansas. This union of over 60 years was blessed with 3 daughters: Gayla Ann, Tanice Marie and Deanna Lynn.

Dick learned early in life that you “live to work…not work to live” and he captured that to a tee. He still made time for his family, but his employees and customers became like family as well. He could put you in your place, but he forgot about it quickly because he wanted you to perform at the best of your abilities. Dick adored his wife of over 60 years and loved being with his kids, grandchildren and great-grandchild, they were his world.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Harold, Kenny and Ronnie Edwards and 2 sisters: Katherine Keeley and Theda Winzer.

Survivors include his wife: Janice of the home; 3 daughters: Gayla Ann Edwards-Gibby, Tanice Marie Edwards and Deanna Lynn (Steve) Nitschke, all of Manhattan; grandchildren: Dallas Nitschke, Brock Gibby, Stevie Stewart, Dakota Ellis and Brianna Gibby; great granddaughter: Amaya Brooks, along with many other family members.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday June10, 2019 at the St. Thomas More Catholic Church 2900 Kimball Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas. Private inurnment will be at a later date.

Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday June 9, 2019 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home with the Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.
