Kansas man blames pharmacy for stroke after medicine mix-up

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man is blaming CVS Pharmacy for his stroke, and he says in a lawsuit that the pharmacy filled his prescription for a blood thinning medication with the wrong drug.

Ben Huie said in his lawsuit he suffered a stroke in July 2017 after taking the wrong medicine. Kansas CVS Pharmacy said in a formal response it didn’t provide the incorrect medicine or cause the stroke.

Huie says taking the incorrect medicine lowered the level of warfarin sodium in his system, which contributed to the stroke. That medicine is an anticoagulant used to treat and prevent blood clots.

Huie had filled his warfarin prescription at its store for several years without problems. Kansas CVS says Huie’s existing medical conditions contributed to the stroke.

According to a media release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, just after 5p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5,  the Salina Police Department responded to the report of an armed carjacking near 9th St. and Schilling Rd. in Salina. The carjacking suspect, who was later identified as 24-year-old Colt F. Wright, of Derby, is alleged to have taken a 2010 Jeep Wrangler at gunpoint.

A short time later, Wright struck a Salina Police Department vehicle with the Jeep in an attempt to elude officers. Then, officers from the Salina Police Department, and deputies from the Saline County Sheriff’s Office began pursuing the suspect. During the pursuit, Wright shot at law enforcement officers from both the Saline County Sheriff’s Office and Salina Police Department who were chasing the fleeing suspect in their agency vehicles. A deputy from the Saline County Sheriff’s Office was wounded when debris from a round striking the vehicle injured his face.

Police continued to pursue Wright until he lost control of his vehicle near Whitmore Rd. and Country Club Rd. in rural Saline County. Soon after he crashed, Wright exchanged gunfire with police. One sheriff’s deputy and one police officer fired their weapons. The suspect was struck by gunfire during the exchange. No law enforcement officers were hit by gunfire.

EMS responded and Wright was transported to Salina Regional Hospital where he underwent surgery. The Saline County sheriff’s deputy was also taken to Salina Regional for treatment of his injury.

The KBI will complete a thorough and independent investigation into this incident. Once the investigation is completed, the findings will be turned over to the Saline County Attorney for review.

Just before 5p.m. Tuesday police responded to a traffic crash at Pawnee and Maize Road in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

First responders found a woman identified as 30-year-old Elissa Warns-Branson of Wichita trapped in a 2013 Hyundai Sonata.  Fire department crews were able to remove her from the vehicle but she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Davidson.

Investigators determined a 2016 Dodge Truck driven by a 55-year-old man was northbound at a high rate of speed on Maize Road when it clipped a northbound 2011 GMC Sierra Truck.

The Dodge then rear-ended the Hyundai that was stopped at the red light at Pawnee, according to Davidson. The collision pushed the Hyundai approximately 50-yards to the north and Dodge truck flipped onto its roof.

The 55-year-old Dodge pickup truck driver remains hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. Authorities believe a medical condition may have contributed to the accident, according to Davidson.

A 56-year-old GMC pickup driver was not injured. It was the 28th fatality accident in Wichita in 2018.

Death now linked to ongoing turkey salmonella outbreak

NEW YORK (AP) — Federal health officials have reported the first death in an ongoing salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey.

People infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Reading, by state of residence, as of November 5, 2018 (n=164) CDC Image

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the death was in California but didn’t have any immediate details. Since last November, the agency said 164 people have fallen ill in 35 states, with the most recent case being reported on Oct. 20.

No products have been recalled, and the agency hasn’t recommended that people avoid turkey. But it said it believes the outbreak is widespread and ongoing, and it reminded people to properly cook and handle turkey with Thanksgiving approaching.

“We are still seeing new illnesses being reported on a weekly basis,” said Colin Basler, an epidemiologist with the CDC.

Basler noted there is a lag time between when a person gets sick and when the illness gets reported to health officials. The California Department of Public Health did not immediately respond to an email seeking additional details about the death.

A single supplier hasn’t been identified in connection with the outbreak. The rare salmonella strain was identified in live turkeys, as well as in ground turkey, turkey patties and raw turkey pet food.

The National Turkey Federation said in a statement that its members have reviewed their salmonella-control programs. The industry group said programs include vaccination and sanitation, such as wearing protective boots and clothing to reduce birds’ exposure to pathogens.

To limit risk, the CDC recommends cooking turkey to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees, and washing hands and counters that have touched uncooked meat.

Salmonella can be found in a variety of foods, including packaged foods. This week, Conagra Brands recalled 2.4 million boxes of Duncan Hines cake mix because of a link to salmonella.

The CDC estimates salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses a year. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps and can last up to seven days. Illnesses are more likely to be severe in the elderly and infants, according to the CDC.

President Trump’s Trade Talks With Canada Carry High Stakes For Kansas

President Donald Trump has reached a tentative trade deal with Mexico, and now the focus of tariff talks shifts to Canada.

Much of Kansas’ farm output is sold to Canada, which has so far not been included in a trade deal to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement.

It’s a high-stakes situation for Kansas industry because Canada is the top export market for the state.

Kansas exports totaled more than $11 billion in 2017, led by agricultural products, aircraft and airplane parts. Nearly $2.5 billion of those exports went to Canada. The other partner in the North American Free Trade Agreement, Mexico, was the second biggest market for Kansas exports, at nearly $2 billion.

When it comes to agriculture, Canada is generally the number three market for Kansas, behind Mexico and Japan.

Josh Roe, deputy secretary of agriculture in Kansas, stressed the importance of the NAFTA deal for Kansas farmers.

“I just can’t place enough emphasis on Canada and Mexico moving forward,” Roe said.

The deal with Mexico keeps tariffs on farm products at zero. Mexico buys around 30 percent of the state’s ag exports.

Roe hopes the same zero-tariff mindset continues in the talks with Canada. Between 8 and 10 percent of Kansas agriculture exports are sold to Canada, including meat from the state’s packing plants, flour and soybean products.

Roe said the top goal for the trade talks is simple: Keep the Canadian market open to Kansas farmers. Many of the state’s producers are already struggling.

“We’re still at a place with very depressed commodity prices, very low farm incomes,” Roe said. “Any additional shock that takes away those markets just has very detrimental impacts.”

However, NAFTA is nearly 25 years old, so Roe believes it could use some updating. Protections for intellectual property and updated definitions for technology could help boost high-tech products.

With the right changes, there could be a growth in the sales of animal pharmaceuticals, seed technology and software related to agriculture.

“A majority of our exports now really are those base ag commodities,” Roe said, “but in the digital era, it’s not always something concrete we can hold in our hands.”

In a letter to Trump this week, Republican Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran sent a similar message. Moran suggested Trump try to lower tariffs on dairy products going into Canada, but he urged the president not to move forward with a new trade deal unless Canada is on board.

“Any new agreement that excludes Canada would, unfortunately, be a significant step in the wrong direction,” Moran said in the letter to the president.
