Firefighters and Sheriff’s Department work on water rescue training

Junction City firefighters and the Geary County Sheriff’s Department recently participated in water rescue training with other agencies.

Fire Chief Terry Johnson said the open water rescue techniques could be used during flooding situations or during an incident at Milford Lake. The University of Kansas Fire Rescue Training Institute also sent representatives to help with the training. “We worked with different tools that we have, different boats, jet ski, different rafts plus a lot of rope work. When you’re trying to rescue someone out of the river ropes are probably one of the primary things you do.”

The training was conducted on the Republican River channel near Grant Avenue and at the pond location behind Beacon Marine.

USD 475 updates information on the new JCHS project

By USD 475

The USD 475 Board of Education took action during a recent working meeting to accept the presentation of the new Junction City High School Guaranteed Maximum Price in two steps.

“Documents are currently out to industry for proposal development but we’re seeing some requests for clarification regarding the electrical portion of the project,” stated David Wild, Chief Operations Officer.

Wild explained to the Board that this might indicate some uncertainty in the specifications adding that we don’t want to rush to failure. Investing a couple of additional weeks now to get the pricing right will be worthwhile in the long run he added.

The Board agreed to accept a GMP presentation on August 5th that will show costs for concrete, steel and under slab plumbing work. The District asked the City for a conditional permit to proceed with this work if the GMP is approved by the Board.

A second presentation on August 19th will include a GMP for all remaining site work, including athletic facilities.

This two-step approach allows construction to remain on schedule while ensuring maximum competition and best available pricing for all remaining phases of work.

In a related manner, the Board is advised that it has additional Heavy Impact Aid funds for use at its discretion to further enhance the high school project. The Board may use these dollars to add space to the high school project without impacting its mill levy and at no additional cost to the taxpayer.

Geary Community Hospital officials have confirmed that former general surgeon, Dr. Charles Bollman, has died. He was 77.

Bollman was a practicing general surgeon for 42 years at Geary Community Hospital before his retirement in June of 2017. In his later years he lived in Osprey, Florida.

Bollman noted in 2017 that when he began working in Junction City in 1974 the community did not have a surgeon. He thought it was a great opportunity for him to start a practice.

Geary Community Hospital CEO Dr. Joseph Stratton confirmed Bollman passed away Tuesday morning. He had been ill in recent days. “That’s a life well lived by someone. There wasn’t a better gentleman than Dr. Charles Bollman, as well as just a very very fine doctor.”

Stratton added Bollman had a big influence on the success of Geary Community Hospital. “When you consider that Geary Community Hospital is about 105 years old and he was here for 42 of those years. That is a significant number of years to be part of a history anywhere of any employer, any institution.”

The Chairman of the Geary Community Hospital Board of Trustees, Dr. Mark Stenstrom, DVM , said. “He was not only a pillar of the hospital  but a pillar of the community. He epitomized the word professional and gentleman.”
