United Way has a waiting list of youth for Adopt a Backpack

The Junction City – Geary County United Way has been conducting the Adopt a Backpack program for youth heading into the new school year. Members of the public can adopt a backpack and fill it with school supplies to help needy youth.

United Way Executive Director Nichole Mader said Monday 41 kids are still waiting to be adopted. “That means we have 41 little backpacks that people can come in and adopt and go shopping for.” Our hope is that we can get as many of those adopted as possible. One way or another we’ll cover them, whether we have to take money from Stuff the Bus to adopt the backpacks or if people will come in and adopt them. Our hope obviously is that the community comes in and adopts them.”

Mahder reported that 6,430 school supply items were donated for the Stuff the Bus program to obtain school supplies for needy children in USD 475 and Saint Xavier schools. More than $2,400 was donated to support that program, and other items remain to be brought in by businesses that participated in the effort.

The chief operations officer for the school district, David Wild, said the project is moving forward. “High school is currently on schedule. Everything is going well. The Board approved phase one of the building plan, and that will be concrete work, some steel reinforcement, some plumbing work.”

Wild added that will let the project continue on the timeline for the project until about the third week of August. “when we’ll start running into a need for some new work. But this phased approach that we’re using allows us to exercise due diligence in cost controls.”

The goal is to have the entire new school completed and open for use by August of 2021.

County Commission adopts proposed budget for publication

The Geary County Commission has adopted a proposed 2020 county budget for publication. The approximate $17 million spending plan will now go to a public hearing on August 19th, said Commissioner Keith Ascher. “It will go to publication and then we set a public hearing for the 19th of this month, and then we’ll take a final vote on it on the 26th.”

The property tax levy would increase slightly from 70.47 up to 70.706 mills, or about three-tenths of one mill.

The county commission trimmed more than 11 mills from budget proposals before they came up with a spending plan. Core services provided by the county received more emphasis this year, while some other agencies that receive funding would see a reduction. Among them there would be a $10,000 reduction to Pawnee Mental Health Services funding and a $30,000 reduction for ATA Bus funding.
