Police Seek FBI Help in Cold Case

Junction City Police Captain Trish Giordano has sought FBI assistance in the investigation into the

disappearance of a 13-year-old Junction City girl, Beverly Ward in 1979.

Giordano stated that Ward was discovered missing from her bedroom, and she has never been found. “It’s never been an actual closed case. We’ve had detectives over the years looking at it. The FBI actually looked at it back then as well, nothing came of it.”

Giordano recently had a discussion with an FBI agent that works on a juvenile rapid response team for kidnappings. He asked for the case to be sent to him and he would find out if the FBI would accept it. “Hopefully they will accept it to open it back up and maybe get a lead on that.”

Giordano noted the only evidence they had in 1979 was that a window screen had been cut and located in the yard, Ward had been looking forward to going to camp, and her money was still there in place so authorities knew she had not been a runaway.

Giordano discussed the case recently during a visit on the JC Now program on 1420 KJCK.

Sales Tax Correction Measure to be Introduced

Dave Baker

68th District State Representative Dave Baker is preparing to introduce a tax bill to make a correction on the sales tax for automobiles.

Baker explained the measure would make the sales tax collected on an automobile go to the zip code where the vehicle is registered. “So if you buy a car in Topeka, Kansas and you live in Ness City that county and Ness City would collect the city and county tax. The dealer would send that back to where the car is registered. The way it is currently, the sales tax stays at the point where the car is purchased.”

Baker noted he didn’t think that was ever the intent of the law to award car dealerships in metropolitan areas with sales tax dollars from other parts of Kansas. “I’m getting a lot of support. Got a couple of senators and some representatives in the metropolitan areas that will probably be voting on the other side of that.  But I’m optimistic that I’m going to get that through. I’ve got a lot of support from some of my fellow representatives.”

Baker stated that is one of his big goals to try and accomplished this session.
