There was a request for donations to the Summer Picnic Program to help feed children at five different sites in Junction City when school is not in session during the summer. Shelf stable foods are made available five days a week for students who attend one of the sites beginning at the close of school in May.

U CAP IT Vending Machine

The Junction City Fire Department has a new machine to provide medical supplies for the Emergency Medical Services provided to the community. This was accomplished with the help of the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation and fund raising at local events.

According to Fire Chief Terry Johnson the Healthcare Foundation raised the $15,000 needed to make this project a reality.

The machine is similar to a vending machine for snacks. It allows for accurate tracking of medications used by EMT’s. By working with the pharmacy at Geary Community Hospital tracking the medications is simpler and less expensive for the JCFD. Dr. Eric Carter and his team in the pharmacy at GCH provide the needed medical supplies and restock the machine as needed. That creates less loss of medications to expiration dates. With the software in the system the Fire Department will become more efficient in how they order the needed medications.

No charges filed in Manhattan High School football beating

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — No Manhattan High School football players will be charged in a beating that injured two teammates last fall.

Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman said in a letter to Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson this week that he found insufficient evidence to prove a criminal case in the October incident. He said investigators were given vague and conflicting statements and he was unable to determine who participated or caused injuries.

The Manhattan Mercury reports two high school football players were hurt by teammates when they were hit and kicked in what was called a “birthday beatdown.” Goodman said the conduct did not rise to the level of a criminal act.

The case was sent to Lyon County because two of the players’ parents work at the Riley County Attorney’s office.
