Sheridan Elementary Seeks Donations to Support Ethopian Readers

Posted By: USD 475

JUNCTION CITY, KAN.  – Geary County Schools USD 475 announced this week that Sheridan Elementary School would be raising funds to benefit school-aged children in Ethiopia. These funds support the efforts of local students who have worked together over the past two years to provide reading material to their Ethiopian counterparts. Last year, USD 475 publicized a writing project taken on by students at Sheridan Elementary. These students were tasked with writing a children’s book and having it published in Amharic, which is a widely used language in Ethiopia. With the help of author, Jane Kurtz, these students accomplished their goal.

“While talking with Jane Kurtz, I asked how our Sheridan book, Help, was fitting into the production of the newly created Ready, Set, Go books. She said we are going to start printing some RSG books in Ethiopia with an Ethiopian publisher, thus supporting their economy. Jane said that our book was being reformatted and if we could raise money, another 1000 books could be published this year. So, I signed up to do just that!” – Carol Settgast, Sheridan Elementary Teacher/Librarian

The public can assist in this effort by donating online at www.ethiopiareads.org and tagging the book, “Help.”

Ready, Set Go Books is an Open Hearts, Big Dreams Fund Project.  OHBD is the content creator and publisher of Ready, Set, Go Books under the creative leadership of Jane Kurtz and production leadership of Steffani Stephens.  OHBD is developing and providing the strategic direction for this project as well as funding. Interviews with a Veteran

Posted By: USD 475

To honor those who have served our military, Lincoln Elementary students spent a day talking with local veterans about their military experiences. Students came up with questions to ask and took notes on their conversations. They will be using these interviews to complete projects in honor of the heroes they had the opportunity to meet, as well as those serving our country around the world.

Living so close to Fort Riley, it is important for our community to remember why we celebrate Veterans Day and take the time to recognize those who have served our country. Lincoln Elementary students enjoyed this opportunity and now have a better understanding of what it means to serve our country through the stories of veterans.

Fall Break Ahead for USD 475

There will be no school in Geary USD 475 next week, the Thanksgiving holiday week. In the past there has been a break for the holiday, but now Monday and Tuesday will also be off days.

The Executive Director of Marketing and Media Relations, Matt Droge, confirmed it’s something new the district is trying this school year. “We realize that parents do take their students and travel for Thanksgiving so by giving them those two extra days we’re hoping that this might be something that could impact attendance and cause kids to miss less school. That’s something that the district is focusing on pretty intensely this year.”

All USD 475 schools will be closed Monday through Friday next week.

Open Door to Conduct Give-Away

The Open Door Homeless Shelter at 136 West Third Street will try to help members of the community with a give-away as we head into the winter months.

Director Mickey Davies explained they’ll try to help folks stay warm. “We have free winter coats, hats and gloves to help people stay warm this winter. The Open Door  is going to invite everybody in on Monday the 19th, nine until four, and Tuesday, the 20th, same time nine to four.”

They want to help those in need. “There is no charge. We would like it if it was those folks who actually needed the clothing, that cannot afford anything to keep warm this winter.”
