Applicants seek seat on Kansas Court of Appeals

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Eighteen attorneys and district court judges have applied for a soon-to-be vacant seat on the Kansas Court of Appeals.

Applicants include former Geary County Attorney and Secretary of State Chris Biggs and District Judges Daniel Cahill of Wyandotte County, Jeffry Jack of Labette County and Teresa Watson of Shawnee County.

Kelly’s appointee would replace Judge Patrick McAnany. He is retiring Jan. 14, when Kelly becomes governor.

One strange year in weather

Chuck Otte

First there was the summer drought and then the heavy rains during the fall months. The drought included high temperatures and wiped out much of the wheat crop, while the rains made fall harvesting and planting late or in some cases impossible.

Geary County Extension Agent Chuck Otte said the county had 50% of normal precipitation the first half of the year, and 159% the second half. “The strangest year that I’ve seen, this is my 37th year here. ” Otte added it was pretty strange with “the extremes all over the place.”

Otte keeps the daily weather records in Geary County.

Morris Hill Wax Museum

By Erin Turner, Morris Hill Library Media Specialist, and the USD 475 Marketing and Media Department.

Morris Hill Elementary second graders recently presented their Wax Museum projects. Each student researched famous “failures” and chose someone they related to or emulated. They spent time researching that person and then typed a report about them.

To make their projects come to life, students dressed as their famous inventor and acted as wax figures with a “button” on their hand. When their button was pushed, they came to life by performing a short blurb about their chosen inventor.
