Two-hour delay for USD 475 students on Monday

Two-Hour Delay – March 4, 2019

JUNCTION CITY, KAN. – Due to dangerously low temperatures expected tomorrow, March 4, 2019, Geary County Schools USD 475 will operate under a two-hour delay.

Out of an abundance of caution and with concern for students who walk, ride, or take a bus to school, USD 475 has made the decision to operate under a two-hour delay for students on March 4, 2019. This delay does not include any alteration to the workday for staff. Staff should report at normal times and direct any additional questions to their supervisor.

This delay of school will likely cause the need to make up time throughout the year for some schools within USD 475. Time could be made up in a variety of ways to include adding a short amount of time to the school day. Notifications will be made to district families as soon as the logistical components are set in place.

The decision regarding cancellation or delay is made by the Superintendent of Schools and/or her designees. The Superintendent uses community partners, Fort Riley, the National Weather Service, and the best information available at the time to make these decisions. The main focus of USD 475 is using available information to make a decision that best suits the safety of students and staff. Prolonged exposure to extremely cold temperatures places student walkers and riders at unnecessary risk.

When school is in session during inclement weather, the final decision of whether or not a child should attend school or stay at home is the responsibility of the parent or guardian.

Former K-State AD John Currie named AD at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman is retiring and the school has chosen former Kansas State AD John Currie to replace him.

President Nathan Hatch announced the moves Sunday, saying Wellman will retire and Currie will start on May 1.

“John is the perfect fit to follow in the footsteps of his mentor,” Hatch said.

Wellman, the longest-tenured AD in Division I, has led Wake Forest’s athletic department since 1992. The school has won five team national championships and seven individual titles under his watch, including men’s tennis in 2018, while raising $400 million in donations during his tenure of nearly 27 years.

The 47-year-old Currie is a Wake Forest alumnus who was Kansas State’s AD from 2009-17. He spent much of 2017 at Tennessee before he was suspended in the midst of the search to replace football coach Butch Jones that turned into a fiasco. He received a $2.5 million settlement with the school in March 2018.

He is taking over a Wake Forest program that is mostly on solid footing, with Dave Clawson’s football program winning three bowl games in three years and a collection of new facilities popping up all over the campus — including an indoor practice facility for football that opened in 2016 and a sports performance center and basketball facility that is scheduled to open later this year.

The most pressing immediate question faced by the department centers on men’s basketball, though the season will end well before Currie’s official start date.

Coach Danny Manning is 65-90 overall and 24-64 in conference play with one NCAA Tournament appearance in five seasons. Barring a miracle run in the postseason, the Demon Deacons are headed for their seventh losing season since 2010 — also the last year they finished above .500 in ACC play.

Public works crews removing snow from streets and roads on Sunday

By Dewey Terrill

JC Post

Junction City and Geary County Public Works crews were busy overnight removing the snow.

Roads are snow packed and drifts are a challenge in some areas. Junction City Public Works Director Ray Ibarra said crews are trying to get the roads taken care, they are putting down material and a new crew came in at 7 a.m. to work on the streets. He noted that they have been working on the arterials and collectors, “got them in halfway decently good shape.” Ibarra said there has been quite a bit of drifting in certain areas. Usually that occurs on the high spots in the city or where there are no trees.

Ibarra urged the public to be patient, and workers will get to areas as soon as possible. On residential areas Ibarra noted public works will look at locations. He estimated about three inches of snow had fallen. “We don’t go into residentials until it’s three inches and plus. We’ll take a look especially on the hillsides.” Ibarra added they can ensure traffic will move smoothly.

The snow received was light in terms of being powdery.

Geary County Road and Bridge supervisor Curtis Van Nahmen reported that county crews worked on the blacktop roads through the night. “Probably the blowing and drifting is the biggest thing. You get something cleaned up and it blows back so we’re just continually running the roads and hope the wind lets up this ( Sunday ) afternoon.” Van Nahmen added east – west roads blow the worst and require the largest number of repeated trips by road crews.

Van Nahmen reported that the roads are plowing pretty clean, but motorists need to be careful if they travel in a drifted area where the snow is deeper.

USD 475 posts winter weather day recovery information

Due to the increased amount of potentially dangerous inclement winter weather days this year, JCHS seniors will be short on school time, a requirement of the State of Kansas. In order to meet this requirement, JCHS has approved and will implement the following plan.

Junction City High School will host Parent Teacher Conferences for all grade levels from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Friday, March 8, 2019. JCHS will also hold mandatory graduation practice for JCHS seniors only on Friday, May 17, 2019. By following this plan, JCHS seniors will not need to extend their school day or make up additional days of school at the end of the year.

If additional inclement winter weather days are taken this school year, the aforementioned plan may be modified.

Elementary School students are also impacted by the increased amount of inclement winter weather days and will be short on required school time. USD 475 is currently in the process of developing a plan to make up this time in a way that is least impactful to the school year, parents and families, and staff. A finalized plan is anticipated to be announced during the first week of March.

OEA authorizes grant application for new elementary school

USD 475 has reported that the federal Office of Economic Adjustment Director Patrick O’Brien this past week gave the authorization for USD 475 to submit a formal grant application for a potential new elementary school on Fort Riley.  That followed meetings in Washington D.C. with USD 475 officials.

The grant would be used to replace Jefferson Elementary School.

Work on the grant application is under way and if approved there could be a new elementary school in the coming years.

Extension agent reports 3.2 inches of snow overnight – early Sunday morning

Chuck Otte

Geary County Extension Agent Chuck Otte reported via social media Sunday morning that he measured 3.2 inches of snow on Sunday morning, and that may be on the high side. The wind poses a challenge.

Otte said Geary Count has now had measurable snowfall in the Junction City area in six consecutive months, dating back to October 15th. Otte said since he began keeping snowfall records in the winter of 1991-93 that’s the first time we’ve had measurable snowfall in six consecutive months.
