Clouds May Obscure Some of Solar Eclipse Viewing

The Geary County Emergency Management Director Garry Berges said Monday morning the viewing for the solar eclipse at mid-day will be somewhat cloudy, and will not be clear. Berges passed that information along after participating in a webinar with the National Weather Service.

Berges said initially it appeared Geary County would be an okay area for eclipse viewing, but that has been downgraded to right on the line between poor and okay. “A lot of it depends on the cloud cover. They’re looking at mainly mid-level and high-level clouds. With the storms that could be close by to the south of us we could see some more clouds come in.”

On traffic flow for the public traveling to northeast Kansas to view the eclipse Berges noted it is moving good in Geary County. U.S. 77 is a traffic route that will take motorists into northeast Kansas where there is expected to be full total eclipse viewing later Monday.

For Geary County the eclipse period is expected to run from about 11:45 a.m. until about 2:30 p.m.

Watch the Eclipse at Munson Prime

Munson’s Prime Steakhouse in Junction City is hosting a special event during the solar eclipse on Monday.

Munson’s Prime

The restaurant at 426 Goldenbelt Boulevard will be open from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. serving a special meal and allowing those in attendance to use their large parking lot to view the solar eclipse.

Owner Deanna Munson said portion of the parking lot will be roped off so cars will not be parked there. “It’s big enough that even if we had a full parking lot I think there would be lots of spaces, and I’ve been out there looking. You certainly can see the sun well from the area we have here.”

Munson’s prime will offer a lunch package for $10. “Two cooperating businesses in Junction City are supplying the sun protection glasses. ” One hundred pair of glasses are available.  The cooperating businesses include Whole Body Chiropractic and Eye Wear Junction City.

The menu will include Deanna’s classic brisket. “which is a three-day process. It’s made with the recipe I’ve always used, it’s more like a London broil type brisket than a barbecue brisket.” Also on the menu will be home grown sweet corn and a big bowl of tossed salad plus a drink of either ice tea or water.

Duty First: 100 Years of the Big Red One

For one hundred years, the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division has been bravely fighting for America’s freedom. Now, the Flint Hills Discovery Center, Fort Riley Museum Complex and the Center of Military History invite you to explore the epic history of the Big Red One through the eyes of five soldiers in the upcoming exhibit, Duty First: 100 Years of the Big Red One.
Opening August 26, visitors of the Flint Hills Discovery Center can immerse themselves in the exceptional history of the Fighting First as they walk through World War I, World War II, Vietnam, the Gulf Wars and the military activity of today, accompanied by the stories five heroic soldiers.
The 1st Infantry Division has been the forefront in America’s conflicts and key to preserving our freedom, said Dr. Robert Smith, Supervisory Curator for Fort Riley Museums. I think the Division and the soldiers need to be
honored in this way to let the public know of the history and the sacrifices they have made and will continue to
make for our country.
The men and women who have served and currently serve in the 1st Infantry Division all have their own story, which when told, teaches us the struggle of battle, the challenge of sacrifice, the rush of victory, and the bonds that exist amongst one another.
The exhibit is extremely impactful in an approachable way, said Flint Hills Discovery Center Director Susan Adams.
Experiencing this exhibit takes the immensity of war and turns it into just one soldier’s story of sacrifice through each conflict. It’s exceptionally personal and powerful.
There is something to be learned and appreciated by adults and children alike in Duty First: 100 Years of the Big Red One. Younger visitors are invited to report for duty at Rags’s Confidence Course in the Mezzanine Gallery. In this Camp Funston “boot camp”, children can “train” alongside Rags, the lovable military pooch who served as the mascot of the Fighting First in WWI.
Along with the exhibit, the Flint Hills Discovery Center will be hosting lectures, bus trips and special events to celebrate the Big Red One. Duty First: 100 Years of the Big Red One will be on display from August 26, 2017 through January 14, 2018.

Recreation Commission Idea Receives Discussion

The Junction City Recreation Commission was discontinued in 2010. Is it time to bring it back?

The concept of forming a recreation commission comprised of representatives from different interests in the community drew brief discussion at a Geary County CVB Advisory Committee meeting this week, and the conversation was then carried over into a Junction City Commission meeting.

Allen Dinkel, City Manager, noted there have been some brief conversations about a city – school recreation commission, but there would be a cost…probably about three mills in taxes. “It’s one of those things that would be great to have, but it’ going to be a matter if you start a joint city – school recreation commission it’s probably going to include mill levy costs, and that’s just something the community has to decide.” Dinkel added he thinks there are a lot of organizations providing activities for youth and adults.

The budget challenge to the City for this type of venture was noted during the Commission’s discussion. The current city debt load was a factor, with Commissioner Pat Landes noting that when the City debt comes down it could be looked at again. Improvements have been made in reducing the debt  but that is still a work in progress.
