Blue Jay Football Coach Randall Zimmerman

A brand new team from a brand new high school will visit Junction City Friday night to play the Blue Jay football team.

The Olathe West Owls will be the opponent for Junction City.

Blue Jay coach Randall Zimmerman explained the Owls have filled an opening on the Junction City schedule. “We’re very very pleased that they said they would come and play this game because if not we would be without a game.”

The Owls are playing a junior varsity schedule in this, the first year of their school. But Zimmerman expects a tough game for the Blue Jays Friday night. “They’re scoring 50 and 60 points against everybody. We can’t be misled with their schedule. They’re a very good football team. They’ve got a bunch of tall, lanky athletes everywhere.” The Owls have not lost a game in junior varsity competition.

Junction City enters the contest 3-3. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Al Simpler Stadium.

You can hear the game on 1420 KJCK, The Talk of JC, with the pregame broadcast beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The Manhattan Indians rushed for five touchdowns and took advantage of two Junction City Blue Jay fumbles to score twice enroute to a 42-12 football win at Bishop Stadium in Manhattan.

The game was close in the first half with the Indians on top 14-12 but after going up 21-12 they took advantage of two Junction City fumbles. One led to a 26-yard touchdown run by quarterback Talon Claussen with 1:55 remaining in the second quarter, and the second came when the Indians picked up a Blue Jay fumble and returned it for their fifth touchdown of the first half in the final minute of the second quarter.

Junction City coach Randall Zimmerman said Manhattan doesn’t make mistakes, they’re an experienced team and their offensive line was dominant. “We had some going things going in the first half. We were able to match them score for score and getting it figured out defensively, but then we turned the ball over twice offensively. We’re such a young team, we’re so inexperienced it was just tough to come back from that.”

The Blue Jays fell to 3-3 on the season while Manhattan improved to 5-1.

Randall Zimmerman Moves to Top of the list for Coaching Wins in Blue Jay Football History

Blue Jay Football Coach Randall Zimmerman

Randall Zimmerman had a big night Friday evening at Al Simpler Stadium.

First he saw his Blue Jay football team rally from a 21-15 deficit to defeat the Washburn Rural Junior Blues 35-21. Then right after the contest he was presented with the game ball by JCHS Athletic Director Matt Westerhaus, signifying the fact that Zimmerman now has more coaching wins than any head football coach in Junction City High School history. His record at JCHS is 143-86.

After the game Zimmerman told JCPost.com that he has never taken a snap or played one down at Junction City. “I just like working with the kids and being around the kids. Maybe all that says is that we’ve been here a long time.”

Zimmerman enjoyed the presentation of the game ball. “It was really neat. I know that there has been talk about that the last couple of weeks. I didn’t want it to happen, but I’m glad the kids were able to experience, this group of kids, because they’re a great group, as every group is. ”

The win over Washburn Rural pushed Junction City to 2-2 on the season, while the Junior Blues fell to 1-3. A big play in the game was a double pass by the Blue Jays that resulted in a 57-yard touchdown pass play to tie the game at 21-21 with 2:25 remaining in the third quarter. Junction City would then go on to score two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to get the win.

Zimmerman surpassed Al Simpler to move to the top of the list for football coaching wins in JCHS history.
