Rural blight concerns have been brought to the attention of the Geary County Commission.
Ben Bennett, Chair, cited as an example people using their yard as a salvage facility. “Like in the case of one property we had out on the east side of the county, they had a whole lot of mobile homes that they’d brought in and set up and were salvaging them out. It’s illegal to do that, but it’s not anything we can do as a County except present it to our law authorities, and they have to decide whether it’s a violation, how they’d go about doing that.”
One idea which will be researched by staff is whether county codes court could be possible to deal with blight issues. Similar courts of that type do exist in Sedgewick and Johnson counties.
