Presentation to Explore Quirky Larger Than Life Myths

gchs museumThe Geary County Historical Society in Junction City will host “Jackalopes, Hodags and other Larger than Life Myths from the American Road,” a presentation and discussion by Erika Nelson on October 17 at 1:30 p.m at the Museum located at 530 North Adams.

Members of the community are invited to attend the free program, which is being made possible by the Kansas Humanities Council. The presentation will examine the origins of the legends, the people who crafted them, and how they reflect the regions they inhabit.

The presentation will be in conjunction with the opening of a new exhibit, “Our Cabinet of Curiosities.” The exhibit explores curiosity cabinets and how they evolved into museums. You can explore the exhibit to learn about natural history artifacts that were found in Geary County.

Erika Nelson is an independent artist, educator, and director of the World’s Largest Things, Inc. Her research interests include roadside attractions and outsider art environments. She explores the back roads of the United States in sesarch of the odd and unique in her mobile museum, the World’s largest Collection of the World’s Smallest Versions of the World’s Largest Things.
