Marshall Staying at Wichit State

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Wichita State and head coach Gregg Marshall have reached an agreement on a deal that will keep him at the school, multiple sources said on Wednesday.

The deal is for seven years and is worth $3 million per year, sources said.

Marshall met with Alabama officials earlier in the week in Wichita. A source told ESPN’s Jeff Goodman that the school was making an offer in the neighborhood of $4 million per year.

Marshall had been the top choice of the Crimson Tide to replace Anthony Grant, who was fired last month.

“I received word tonight that Coach Gregg Marshall has chosen to remain the head basketball coach at Wichita State,” said Alabama director of athletics Bill Battle in statement. “I fully respect his decision and wish him and his family all the best. My objective in this search is focused on one goal: to get the best person available to lead the Alabama men’s basketball program. I remain determined to bring to our program a proven head coach with impressive credentials, one who understands and values our program, wants to lead our program, and is excited about what can be accomplished at the University of Alabama.”

Marshall said last year he was “very happy” at Wichita State, saying “it would take something really big” for him to leave. The Shockers have gone to four straight NCAA tournaments and advanced to the Sweet 16 two of the past three seasons.
