The Junction City Commission approved Sunday liquor sales on January 6th and the 90 day petition period ends Thursday.
Petitions against Sunday liquor sales in Junction City must be submitted to the Geary County Clerks office no later than 4:30 p.m. on
Thursday in order to be counted. A petition must have 277 signatures on it, five percent of the total number of registered voters in the 2012 Presidential election, of Junction City residents in order to be counted. As of Tuesday no petitions had been filed according to Allen Dinkel, City Manager.
If no petitions are filed by the deadline liquor stores in Junction City can begin selling liquor starting Sunday, March 22nd.
Dinkel did want to remind everyone that due to state statute there are still three days a year that liquor cannot be sold on.
“There is still going to be three days a year were sales are not allowed,” said Dinkel. “One is Easter Sunday, so if we have Sunday sales this weekend two weeks later no Sunday sales on that day. Christmas day will still be off limits and so will Thanksgiving day.”
The commission passed the Sunday Liquor sales to give local liquor stores the option of selling on Sundays. It will not require stores to open on Sunday if they choose to do so.
