Denton Captures First at Basehor-Linwood

Junction City Blue Jay senior Jeryl Denton captured first place in the 152 pound weight class at the blue jay logo34-team Basehor-Linwood Invitational.

Denton went 5-0 in the tournament, which was spread over Friday and Saturday.

Junction City finished sixth in the team competition, while Goddard finished first.

Other strong weight class finishes for the Blue Jays included Downey Wood third at 138 pounds, Jake Bazan fourth at 145, Max Bazan fifth 106, Aryus Jones fifth 160, and Jaquan Robinson sixth at 170 pounds.

The team started their return trip home from the tournament Saturday on one of the school district’s Blue Jay buses, but coach Bob Laster confirmed it broke down on I-70 about 10 miles out of Kansas City. Parents of the wrestlers were contacted and were able to give the players and coaches rides back to Junction City.

It’s not the first time there have been problems with Blue Jay  activity buses breaking down for Junction City High school sports teams, but the Board of Education recently moved to address that problem by agreeing to lease two brand new buses through an arrangement with B & B Busing. Those are expected to become available by the 2015-2016 school year.  The new buses will replace the two Blue Jay buses that have been experiencing mechanical difficulty.
