Lawrence Free State rallied from a 10-7 deficit by recovering a kickoff and converting that possession into a field goal, and then intercepting a Blue Jay pass and returning it for a touchdown with 7:51 remaining in the second quarter to go in front of Junction City. The Firebirds would go on to lead at halftime 23-10, and defeat the Blue Jays in the Class 6A postseason playoffs 37-17 on a bitterly cold night at Al Simpler Stadium.
Junction City jumped on top early with a 27-yard field goal by Wayne Shirley, and led again late in the first quarter after Jovon Baldwin caught a pass from Ryan Hennington and rambled 76 yards for a touchdown.
Daniel Clarke hit three field goals in the ballgame for the Firebirds, who are now 8-3. They will advance into the Substate round of the 6A playoffs against Hutchinson next week.
The Blue Jays finished a solid season that included a district championship and an 8-3 final record.
