The National Commander of the American Legion Mike Helm paid a visit to Chapman Monday.
He brought a message to the local post about the American Legion’s efforts on behalf of veterans’ healthcare, compensation, and the Legion’s concerns about national security.
On the Veterans’ Administration front Helm felt progress has been made.
“We’ve got veterans getting into the facilities at a faster rate, and like they should be. Those numbers are getting better.”
Helm noted compensation claims numbers are reducing. “But our concern is on that same side once the claim is denied it’s counted as a claim processed, but then when the veteran appeals it goes over on the appeals side. The appeals side of that is going up.We have a concern about that.”
