Post to Conduct 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony

Fort RileyThe 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley will host a 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Global War on Terrorism monument between Cavalry Parade Field and the Cavalry Museum on main post.

The ceremony, a tradition at Fort Riley since the 2001 terrorist attacks, serves to honor and remember those who were killed Sept. 11, 2001, and to recognize the bravery and heroism of those who answered the nation’s call to remain On Point defending Americans in the aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon 13 years ago.

The monument is a small replica of the twin towers on a pentagon-shaped base. It bears the names of Fort Riley Soldiers who have given their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq.

This year, five names from the 1st Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade fallen will be unveiled will be added to the monument, bringing the total number of soldiers honored on the monument to 213.

The new heroes who will be recognized are:

–Chief Warrant Officer 2 Randy L. Billings

–Chief Warrant Officer 2 Joshua B. Silverman

–Sgt. Peter C. Bohler

–Sgt. 1st Class Omar W. Forde

–Spc. Terry K. D. Gordon.

Billings, Silverman, and Bohler were assigned to the 3rd Assault Helicopter Battalion of the 1st Combat Aviation Brigade. Forde was a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, and Gordon was assigned to the 1st Squadron of the 6th Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Combat Aviation Brigade.

Major Paul Funk II, 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley commanding general, 1st inf. Div. and Fort Riley, is scheduled to be the event’s speaker. The event is open to all members of the Central Flint Hills community.
