Wheat harvest is beginning in Geary County.
Chuck Otte, KSU Research and Extension Agent, said there was test cutting as early as Wednesday.
The owner of Geary Grain Elevator Joe Hund stated at mid-day on Friday that just a few loads had been received at his elevator. “They kind of tried to get started and it’s still running some moisture.” Hund anticipated later Friday afternoon or Saturday afternoon they would try to get started.
Hund is expecting a mixture of both good and poor wheat this harvest season. “We were lucky. Our wheat is probably better than a lot of the wheat in Kansas. Last year was such a good crop, so I don’t see anything like that, but I think it’ll be decent.” Hund thought the crop in 2013 was 10 to 15 bushels above average.
