Milford Lake Update

Milford Lake is still under a blue green toxic algae warning. milford lake two

The rain on Monday led to an increase in the elevation of about one foot by Tuesday, and there is an expectation the inflow from the Republican River could raise that elevation another two feet before it levels off.   Beginning this week the Corps of Engineers increased the outflow from the lake to 1,000 cfs.

The Operations Project Manager for the Corps at the Lake, R. J. Harms is hopeful that can be maintained. “That should moderate some of our increase.”

Harms says replacing some water could help with the algae by stirring up some of the sedimentation in the Lake. But it could also hurt by bringing in more nutrients into the Reservoir.

Under the warning advisory boating and fishing are still allowed, but no activities where there is direct contact with the water such as swimming or jet skiing.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment took new water sample tests on Monday.  The results from those tests should be back on Thursday.  The future status of the warning will not be known until then.
