There have been some reports of algae at Milford Lake and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has tested the water.
RJ Harms, Projects Manager for the Corp of Engineers at Milford Lake,
said that KDHE tested the water on Monday,”and we should know some results by tomorrow (Friday). We’ll be sure to let folks know if there are any concerns with that yet and then we will just roll on into summer.”
Harms said that ice on the lake over the winter allowed the water to clear up and that can create a better environment for algae to grow.
“You can see a long ways down into the water and unfortunately that hurts us with the algae. The sunlight gets deeper down into the water and gets more plant life stimulation and growth in the water and that unfortunately feeds the algae.”
The lake did not suffer much from toxic algae blooms last summer, in fact the lake was only under an advisory or warning for just two weeks out of last summer.
Harms did say that the lake is currently sitting about half a foot high and they are not releasing any water at this time.
“We haven’t had to yet, we’re still just kind of holding. We haven’t needed to release anything for anybody.”
He went on to say that in the summer they typically try to keep the water level a couple of feet high to make it better on the boat ramps and recreational boating for people.
