The Possibility for Another Round of BRAC Still up in the Air

Talks about base realignment and closure have been swirling around multiple military installations across the country, including Fort Riley.

Although a declaration of BRAC has yet to be signed, one of the first steps taken before Fort RileyBRAC can occur appears to be underway according to John Armbrust, Executive Director of the Governor’s Military Council in Kansas.

That step includes a study of force structure inventory that is expected in twenty years and how it matches up with the current infrastructure. That study will give a sense of how much excess infrastructure there may be.

Armbrust called that study a BRAC driver. “That first step, it appears will be authorized so there can be some expenditure of funds to conduct that study.”

It remains unknown whether a BRAC will occur, “but that is a step that has to be taken for BRAC to occur.”

Armbrust shared that information Friday during the Flint Hills Regional Council Board meeting in Wamego.
