A grass fire burned approximately 40 acres and jumped one interior road on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property in the West Rolling Hills – K244 Highway area on the southwest side of Milford Lake Wednesday evening.

That information was provided by Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges.
He stated the fire began just after 5 p.m. Wednesday. It had been an earlier controlled burn that rekindled due to the winds that developed Wednesday afternoon. Geary County responded with six trucks and one command vehicle, while Dickinson County District One and Fragrant Township sent a combined total of five units to assist in putting out the fire. The property where the fire occurred belonged to the Corps of Engineers and Craig Altenhofen.
There were no injuries and no major structure damage. Berges did report that the blaze jumped an interior road on the Corps of Engineers property.
After it was put out the blaze rekindled again later Wednesday evening, but Geary County firefighters responded to put it out.
