Rural Firefighters Busy on Friday

As of 9:30 p.m. Friday Geary County rural firefighters had responded to five grass fires over an approximate seven hour period.

Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges said the first occurred near Old 77 Highway south of Vinton School Road, the second along Wandersee Road off of K-57 north of the Morris – Geary County line, the third in the School Creek area on the west side of Milford Lake, a fourth on J-Hill, and the fifth in the Skiddy, Howard, Nelson Road area about five miles south of Junction City.  On the fire along Wandersee Road the Geary County Rural Fire Department assisted the Dwight Fire Department, and on J-Hill Grandview Plaza served as the lead department.

Berges noted one Grandview Plaza firefighter became overheated, was checked at the scene by EMS, and then released to go home.

In the J-Hill fire he indicated a couple of propane tanks and two houses were threatened, and one small outbuilding was consumed by that fire.   Grandview Plaza Fire Chief Jerome Thomas has also confirmed that approximately 200 acres burned in that fire.
