The Geary County Commission approved three bids for a new Geary County Rural Fire Station along McDowell Creek Road, south of I-70.

The bid for the building itself was awarded to Rigid Global Building out of Colorado for $11,323. The Concrete work was awarded to Gustafson concrete out of Junction City in the amount of $9,170, and Wildcat Services out of Chapman will construct the building in the amount of $8,360.

Larry Hicks, Commission Chair, did say that the funding for the project has been allocated and is available.

By spreading out the bids to three separate companies the County will be able to save money according to Garry Berges, Rural Fire Chief.

“If you do a General Contractor sometimes there’s some mark up and stuff and this way we have a little better control over it,” Berges said.

The current fire station is roughly 35 years old, does not have a concrete floor, insulation on the ceiling is deteriorating and the opening for the fire truck is rather small making it a tight fit for the fire truck according to Berges.

Concrete work on the new station is expected to start as soon as the ground dries up but the building it self will not be in for another couple of weeks.
