The Geary County Commissioners will take a closer look at each of their districts Thursday morning during a special meeting.
According to state law each of the three districts in Geary County must have a contiguous population and as of right now they are not.
Commissioner Florence Whitebread, who represents the third district, it currently has the lowest population of the three. District one, represented by Commissioner Ben Bennett, has the largest and districts two, represented by Commission Chair Larry Hicks, is right in the middle.
“We need to equalize these. We also have several pieces of properties that are in districts that are not contiguous,” Whitebread said.
She explained that all of Fort Riley is divided up between all of the districts and during Monday’s meeting the moved those properties in to the third district.
“We still have a couple of areas with Ben’s and Larry’s that are not contiguous and we need to look at those. Also by putting Fort Riley in the third district we’ll see then what the numbers look like for mine because mine was considerably lower than theirs.”
Whitebread did say that the only thing that will change for those who live inside a district that get’s re-organized is who they vote for, not where they vote.
