Senate Working on Methods of Complying With Court Funding Order

State Senator Jeff Longbine has confirmed that the Kansas Senate Ways and Means, and dollars twoEducation Committees are working on methods of complying with the Kansas Supreme Court Order to put $129 million in new funding into the budget for public school finance equalization.

Longbine stated, “I’m hopeful we’ll have legislation on that maybe as early as next week. It may end up being the first week of the Veto Session, but I want to ensure our constituents that we are working on that court order, and we’re trying to figure out how best to comply to make sure that we’re in compliance with the Court. Of course we need to figure out how we’re going to fund $129 million also.”

The Kansas Supreme Court order calls for more funding for capital outlay and local option budgets for school districts in Kansas.

USD 475 Geary County officials have estimated it could mean approximately $2.1 million in new funding for that district.
