Kevin Willmott’s film ‘Jayhawkers’ comes to Junction City Saturday night.
It will be shown at 7:00 p.m. at the C.L. Hoover Opera House.
This is the story about Wilt Chamberlain during his time at the University of Kansas, his impact on civil rights, and how his presence changed the Lawrence community.
The man who recruited Wilt to KU, Phog Allen, is portrayed by Kip Niven. Niven says the idea of recruiting chamberlain to Kansas was high on the radar for Phog Allen.
“The person who really signed off on the project was Chancellor Murphy, Franklin Murphy, who for his own reasons wanted to have Wilt come to KU,” Niven said. ” Murphy was quite a visionary and felt that a strong presence of an African American athlete on campus would be great, not only for the athletic program, but for beginning to build some relations with the African American community and improve the civil rights picture on campus and in Lawrence and in the region.”
Niven is a KU alum, who has appeared on Broadway, off-Broadway, in regional theatres, as an artist-in-residence, and more than a dozen feature films.
He has performed in more than 100 network television shows as well.
Tickets for the show Saturday night are $10 for adults, and $5 for students 18 and under. You can get those at the Opera House.
