The Geary Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Advisory Committee recently agreed to support a possible increase in the County’s transient guest tax by one percent to help fund a new sports complex.

 

Geary County Commissioner Larry Hicks is not opposed to the increase, but wants a portion of the additional revenue that would be received diverted to the C. L. Hoover Opera House, in addition to any sports complex.

Hicks surfaced his own idea for a one percent increase in the transient guest tax back in 2010. But he noted Monday at that time the County was not in support of his idea. “One of the  things that I had wanted to target was a sustained level of funding for the Opera House at that time, and also funding for the Junction City Arts Council, to which the suggestion of the Arts Council funding was not well received.”

The transient guest tax is paid by users of local hotels and motels.

No final action has been taken at this point on any increase in that tax. The Geary County Commission would have to give their approval as one of the steps before any increase could occur.
