There will be no school in Geary USD 475 on Monday due to the dangerous low temperatures that are expected.

USD 475 officials issued the announcement via text message and the district’s facebook page. They did add that the Devin Center ( administration center ) will be open at 10 a.m.

There is a wind chill warning in effect until noon Monday.

USD 475 Superintendent Ron Walker stated that he had been tracking the weather system. “I hoped it would change, but it did not, and we’re looking at some really frigid temperatures. Plus, the wind chill factor is going to be just awesome.” Walker also noted that there are many students in the district that walk to school, “who don’t have any protection. When you consider the fact that in temperatures like that you can get frostbite  in about five seconds, it was an easy call for me to make.”

Other area districts and programs that will be closed on Monday include USD 473 Chapman, Manhattan USD 383, USD 481 Rural Vista, and Cloud County Head Start, both a.m. and p.m. classes.

USD 378 Riley County schools will be delayed on Monday for two hours. Rock Creek USD 323 schools will have a two-hour delay on Monday, and morning pre-school is cancelled.

The low Sunday night is expected to dip to about -9 with wind chill readings as cold as -27.

Monday is forecast to be bitterly cold with a high temperature of around 8 above. The lowest wind chill readings in the morning are forecast at -28.
