There were over 100 people in the C.L. Hoover Opera House Monday for the annual Veterans Day ceremony put on by the Geary County Veterans Alliance.

The VFW No. 8773 Color Guard along with Boy Scout Troops 60 and 260 opened the ceremony

with the pledge of allegiance. Carter Oliver, VFW Fourth District Vice Commander, was the master of ceremonies.

This years guest speaker was Tom Moxley, 68th District State Representative and a Veteran of the Vietnam War. In his speech Moxley explained that a Kansas Native played an important role in establishing Veterans Day as a national holiday. “U.S. Representative Edward H. Rees, an Emporia, Kansas native, proposed legislation in Congress to change the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in order to honor all citizens who served their country in uniform.”

Moxley also mentioned that another Kansas Native signed that bill into law,”In 1954 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming every November 11th as Veterans Day and called on Americans everywhere to honor the countries veterans and to rededicate themselves to piece.”

Moxley enlisted in the army shortly after graduating from Kansas State University. He was deployed to Korea during the Vietnam War.
