Not So Fast on Courthouse Security

Geary County Sheriff Tony Wolf recently announced plans to implement additional security measures at the Geary County Courthouse in January of 2014, to accomodate security requirements in the wake of the conceal carry legislation approved in Kansas. geary county

But it may have been premature.

According to Ben Bennett, Geary County Commission Chair, officials are still discussing the plans for the conceal carry that is going into effect, and what they will or will not do in the way of security at county buildings. The Sheriff has been authorized to coordinate some studies and some discussion between all of the department heads, and with the County Attorney. “And to work with the County Attorney through the Department Heads to come up with a plan so that we can implement it by the 1st of January.”

Bennett indicated the county might work toward a plan for the next four years. He noted some other counties have already decided not to make changes, other than possibly signage.

On whether there would be additional security at the Geary County Courthouse beginning Jan. 2 the Commission Chair said he couldn’t say for sure. “We’re going to have a plan to put into place.”

Bennett confirmed Wolf announced the security plan for the courthouse prematurely. “Because we’re ( county commission ) the ones that make the decision, not him.” Bennett added Wolf still has his proposed security plan in mind for the Courthouse. “We’ll have to make the decision of how we want to implement that, if we do.”
