Kansas Supreme Court Heard Arguements on States Appeal of Public School Funding Ruling

On Tuesday the Kansas Supreme Court heard arguments about a lower courts ruling that the state must increase it’s funding of public schools K-12 by $440 million.

Earlier this year a three judge panel in Shawnee County District Court ruled that the state must increase it’s funding of the states public schools. Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt filed the appeal with the states Supreme Court.

An Attorney representing the state claimed that the lower courts ruling was flawed because the Plaintiffs lacked standing and posed a financial solution that goes beyond the courts realm.

Ron Walker, Superintendent of Geary USD 475, told JcPost.com that if the supreme court holds up the lower courts ruling that it would benefit school districts across the state,” It will also provide most school districts the ability to do more for students. Right now most school districts are operating with a lot less than they did in the past and frankly with everything that’s coming down from leadership we see that were probably are going to have to do a lot more.”

The supreme court is not expected to make a ruling on the case until early next year.
