The Historical and Archaeological Society of Fort Riley has been preparing 2,100 pies over the course of this week in preperation of this weekends Fall Apple Days festival at Fort Riley.

Volunteers are working three shifts a day to prepare the apple pies. Brenda Werner, President of HASFR, said that they’ve been averaging between 40 and 60 volunteers each shift,”It’s hard for me to even count, I guess I would have to go back and look at it but it’s been several hundred.”

As of Wednesday night they had prepared almost half of the 2,100 needed for this weekends festival.

Werner had some special volunteers for Wednesday nights evening shift. The Commanding General of Fort Riley, Major General Paul Funk was on hand to help with the preperations. ” It’s about giving back. It’s about volunteerism, it’s about being apart of somthing bigger than yourseves, just like the army it’s about being a part of a great team,” Funk said.

The festival runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Artillery Parade Field at Fort Riley. Pies will be on sale during the festival $13 frozen or $14 pre baked. Those who are looking for just a slice purchase a slice for $3.25.
