The continuation of a public hearing on a conditional use permit for the proposed re-opening and operation of a rock quarry just west of Junction City did not occur at the Metropolitan Planning Commission meeting Thursday evening at the Municipal Building.

Jim Didas wants to use rock from the former quarry site located on the east side of Munson Road between Rucker Road and K-244 Highway for projects on Fort Riley.

Last month nearby residents protested, citing concerns ranging from damage to their water wells from blasting to dust, noise, and traffic.

Didas asked that the public hearing be moved to the Planning Board’s meeting in October, and that request was granted. MPC Chair Maureen Gustafson noted Didas sought the request because he had some documentation that he received late that he needed to present to the board.   Zoning Administrator David Yearout noted historically those types of requests have been granted.

The next meeting will be Thursday October 10.

There was a full audience in the MPC meeting room Thursday night for the expected public hearing, but after learning of the continuance the majority of those in the audience departed the meeting.
