Kansas lawmakers will be in Topeka beginning Tuesday for a three-day special session.

Governor Brownback called the special session to fix the state’s “Hard 50” criminal sentencing law. Lawmakers from both parties agree on legislation to rewrite the law allowing convicted murderers to be sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 50 years. A U.S. Supreme Court decision in june raised questions about the law’s constitutionality.

State Representative Allan Rothlisberg said personally he didn’t think the special session was needed. “There are some cases though that could affect the sentencing of it. And these are not nice people. And I don’t want them out on the street in 25 years so perhaps in that case, I think there was two or three of them, with the sentencing coming up this would probably be good to do this.”
