Robert Jennings Smith

Robert Jennings Smith, 86, of Wamego, Kansas, formerly of Alta Vista, died Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the Valley Vista Good Samaritan Center.  He had been a long-time resident of the area.

Bob was born December 12, 1932, in Falfurrias, Texas, the son of Andrew J. and Mary Emma Brochet Smith.  He attended local schools and then joined the United States Navy.  Bob served for over twenty-one years in the Navy, during the Korean War and Viet Nam Conflict

After retiring from military service, Bob worked for many years at the GBRA Water Authority monitoring the water flow for the electrical generating plant in Seguin, Texas.  After his retirement he moved to Kansas and lived in Alta Vista until moving to Wamego.  Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He married Mary Elizabeth Taylor Barnes on November 28, 1972, in Seguin, Texas.  She survives.

Bob is also survived by his step-children; Walter “Buddy” Barnes (Jane), Alma, Charlie Barnes, San Antonio, Texas and Charlotte Smith, San Antonio, Texas; his sister, Dorothy Dolgner, Houston, Texas; as well as numerous nieces, nephew, step-grand and step-great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a step-daughter, Carolyn Lisembee.

A private inurnment will be held at the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery near Manhattan.  The family suggests memorial contributions to a charity of the donor’s choice, and those may be sent in care of Campanella-Gentry Funeral Home in Alma.
