MPC recommends no on a request for a new cell phone tower

The Metropolitan Planning Commission has voted no on a request by Florida-based BRT to put a cell phone tower on the east side of Milford Lake. The company wants a conditional use permit to install a 300-foot tall tower approximately four miles north of Junction City. The recommendation from the MPC now goes to the Geary County Commission, who will make the final decision.

Zoning Administrator Troy Livingston said the target site for the tower is near the end of Budden Road. He noted that area is under served by cell service. “It’s not so much coverage anymore, but it is capacity. They’re way over capacity, they don’t have enough capacity.”

There was opposition from the public to the proposed tower, including safety concerns, and the opinion that the site is one of the final properties near the lake available for development.

The MPC met Thursday evening at the Geary County Office Building.
