Mary Lucille Bettles

Mary Lucille Bettles age 91, of Herington, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 31st, at her residence.  She was born July 28, 1928, in Delavan, Kansas, a daughter of the late LeRoy and Florence Platz.

Mary was a charter member of the Herington, VFW Auxiliary, Dix Day, Post #1281, and a member of the First Christian Church of Herington.  She was also a member of the Town and Country Card Club for many years.  She spent most of her life helping her husband Orval run his soil conservation business.

As a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she loved spending her time with her family.  She would teach the young ones how to shoot marbles and the older ones how to play gin rummy, and kings corners, and occasionally a lively game of poker.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Orval, whom she married on June 27, 1948, as well as six brothers and two sisters, Marjorie Bettles, Ralph Platz, Clifford Platz, Lloyd Platz, Waldo Platz, Virginia Sarver Vess, Walt Platz and Howard Platz.

Mary was the mother of four children who survive her: Tom (Jane) Bettles of Kearney, Nebraska, Larry (Susan) Bettles of Herington, Connie (Roger) Beemer of Herington, and Ginny (Steve) Woodruff of Greeley, Colorado.   She was blessed with eleven grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.  Also surviving is one sister, Bonnie Wallace of Osawatomie, Kansas, as well as many nieces and nephews.
