Brief court appearances for two capital murder defendants

The two men charged with capital murder in connection with the December death of Jenna Schafer, 31, Junction City, made brief appearances in Geary County District Court Tuesday morning.

Dion Green, 33 and Mashaun Baker, 33, both of Junction City, are facing capital murder charges including two counts for Green in connection with the shooting death of Schafer and her unborn child, while Baker faces one count stemming from the allegation he hired Green to kill Schafer.

In court Tuesday it was noted that Deputy Public Defender Jillian Waesche has filed a motion to withdraw from the case representing Baker, but asked for a delay on a ruling until a determination has been made on whether the prosecution would pursue the death penalty. If that occurs a death penalty qualified attorney would represent Baker. A status check has been scheduled for him in District Court at 9 a.m. on January 15th.

In the Green case a request has been submitted to the Capital Offense Coordinator’s Office to represent him. A status check has been scheduled at 1:30 p.m. January 15th to also possibly learn if the death penalty  will be pursued.
